Subject: Re: GILS agreement on last copy

Janet and UC-GILS,

CDC has had an initial discussion of the proposed GILS MOU on Last Copy Retention of

Government Publications that you submitted to us in July. We appreciate the intent of the

document in attempting to ensure a comprehensive historic collection of government

information in UC, but we are not ready to approve it at this time. Because the proposed

MOU's scope is so extensive, it has raised some questions that dovetail CDC's current

broader discussion about the directions and scope of the Shared Print Program, and provides

us with some more concrete examples of issues under discussion.

CDC will be continuing its discussions to clarify the directions and goals for the Shared

Print Program into the Fall, and we expect that the outcome of the broader discussion will

help us respond to this MOU. I will get back to you with further guidance on potentially

refining the MOU when CDC has been able to further clarify broader directions for shared

print.

Thank you again for your efforts in this direction.
