COURSE TITLE: ICT in Tourism (Introduction to Tourism and Travel)

LEVEL: Year 13

TIME: Full year (four periods per week)

Introduction

This course is to prepare young women and men to live in and contribute competently in a front office/business environment which involves regular public/client-contact, and with an introduction to the travel and tourism industry.

Aim

The course is a preparatory one for students to move comfortably in a world of commerce and industry (in particular the travel industry), with a focus on applying information management skills to communicate rapidly and effectively.

Prerequisite

·  Students should have satisfied the school requirement for entry to Year 13.

Qualifications

·  National Certificate in Tourism and Travel Introductory Skills Level 2 v 3 (New Qualification)

·  Unit standards in generic computing (Levels 1, 2 and/or 3 – depending on the ability of each individual student).

·  Develop the ability to promote New Zealand as a tourist destination and develop an knowledge base of Pacific Island countries and Australia as tourist destinations.

Course Requirements

·  Regular attendance in class - arriving promptly at all times.

·  All absences fully and satisfactorily explained in writing, signed by guardian/caregiver - in accordance with school policy.

·  Completing all course work (including assessment work) to a standard appropriate for this level, in the time allowed/set.

·  Participate in all practical work which is deemed to be an important element of the school’s annual programme of events, as organised by the teacher in charge.

·  A high standard of dress, grooming and hygiene appropriate to a work-place situation where contact with clients would be the norm.

Reassessment for Unit Standards

Where students do not satisfy the requirements, reassessment opportunity is provided, barring unforeseen circumstances. [One reassessment opportunity only is offered for each of the last five assessments.]

Recording Results

It is the students’ responsibility to maintain their own record of results. For this purpose they are provided with the attached Assessment Schedule.

Assessment Results Appeals

In accordance with Pukekohe High School policy, the student should follow standard procedures ie concerns should be in writing and approach is to be made in the first instance to the Head of ICT - Mrs Grusning.

Non Completion of Course

Standard pro forma letters will be sent to parent/guardian/caregiver where concerns exist about poor attendance, lack of effort, poor behaviour/attitude, in accordance with Pukekohe High School policy.
