Discussion:
Afram 27: Brown noted that this is not a new course; she is just requesting a permanent number for a selected topics course previously approved by CIC. Also see discussion under Program Changes.
Husv courses: See discussion under Program Changes.
Medas 201 248NA: Bracy and Berry noted that La Clínica de la Raza is asking for Merritt to train medical assistants to staff their clinic and to have better-trained/prepared employees. La Clínica and Merritt have been in talks for over a year. Meanwhile, they keep losing employees to Kaiser. They also need workers who can deal with an ethnic clientele. Discussion ensued around the legality of medical assistants administering injections and whether or not they need to be certified or licensed. The response was that some are certified and some are not. According to the Medical Board’s web site, medical assistants are not currently certified, licensed, or registered by the state of California. The question arose as to whether the curriculum had to be approved by the appropriate board before being brought to CIPD. Bracy responded that training is received under the direction of a doctor or RN and that she saw no wording about the curriculum needing to be approved by a Board in any of the regula-tions. The course number was changed to a selected topics number. If the offering is successful, a permanent number will be requested at a later time.
Nurad 210: See discussion under Program Adds (approval for Nurad 210 was rescinded).
Nurs 348NB: Boehm-Bauer added this item to the agenda as she is proposing to offer the course in the M05 term to enhance the success of graduating students taking the State certification exam. The course would also be helpful to currently-enrolled students as a review of the Nursing curriculum. Students would take components previously failed.
Follow-up/Action:
Afram and Husv courses were approved as presented; Medas 248NA and Nurs 348NB were approved as corrected. Approval for Nurad 210 was rescinded by CIC (see discussion under Program Adds). Bracy will do follow-up research regarding certification for medical assistants.

Discussion:
Adjus Courses: Harding noted that many of the old Adjus outlines are being updated, some with suggested changes to course descriptions. A recommended text is needed for Adjus 51.
Anthr 7: Harding noted that this is just a change in course title that was approved by Laney and Merritt faculty.
Husv Courses: See discussion under Program Changes.
Lanht 35A-B: Grampp noted that he is splitting the course into A and B levels and that the units can be reduced from 5 to 4 – the additional unit is not needed with the addition of level B to the course.
Nursing Courses and Program: Boehm-Bauer noted that changes to the program narrative/requirements are being made, effective Fall 2005. Changes to Nursing courses were approved by the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). The revised course outlines now have online components. Changes are being made to course descrip-tions and prerequisite information because of the addition of an online component to all required courses (Nurs 1-14). The wording was tweaked to comply with Board mandates. The lab content was updated for all courses having labs.
Follow-up/Action: All courses were approved as presented, with the exception of Lanht 35A-B which was approved as corrected. A suggested text needs to be listed for Adjus 51. The separate lab content needs to be listed for the Nurs 1-5 courses (all course content was listed under the “lecture” portion on the outlines, as the content on the outlines was moved from the old to the new outline form which has a separate section for lab content).

CIS Course Deactivations: See discussion under Program Deactivations.
Follow-up/Action: All deactivations were approved as presented, with the exception of CIS courses needed for the Internet, Help Desk, and Web Page certificates which will be retained (see discussion under Program Deac-tivations).
9. PROGRAM ADDS:
Nurad† / Acute Care Nurse Assistant Certificate / Add
F05
Discussion:
Acute Care Nurse Assistant Certificate and Course: Bracy noted that the addition of the Acute Care Nurse Assistant course (Nurad 210) and certificate were never discussed with her as the Department Chair for Vocational Nursing. She would not have approved them for submission to CIC as there is no current contract with a skilled nursing facility that would allow us to do this type of training at the present time. CIC voted to rescind the previous approval for the Nurad 210 course and to not list it in the 2005-07 catalog. The certificate addition request was tabled.
