Curriculum Corner
September 2017
The 2017-2018 school year will continue to see some exciting changes in Curriculum! The second year of the “Academic Activity” classes will invite all students to think critically as the engineering and “maker” mindset, productive struggle, independent reading conferences, and an overall deeper analysis of content is presented. This curriculum “raises the bar” and exposes students to a rich level of thinking providing enrichment to students at all levels. Additionally every student will take assessments in math (i-Ready) and reading (Achieve3000). The results of these assessments will help teachers customize instruction, focusing on building skills for students where they struggle, and challenge students to reach the next level where they show mastery.
The modified block schedule at Intermediate South allows students more time for reflection and application of the new ideas and information that is presented. Teachers have more time for planning and delivery of quality instruction, as time in halls for class change is reduced. This schedule provides opportunities for students to engage in interdisciplinary study, cooperative learning activities and other authentic projects. Teachers have been prepping by participating in summer workshops on student engagement, learner-active classrooms and critical thinking. Ongoing professional development will be offered to teacher throughout the school year.
Look for continued updates from the content area supervisors and the Curriculum office all year in this newsblast!
