TDJ4M – Summative
In the next month we will be completing our summative. You will have the opportunity to design and build a room. In order to complete this project you will be using the skills we have learned this year in class such as, measurement, scale, colour theory and budgeting. I encourage you to use your imagination with this project, while still following the instructions.
The total worth of this assignment will be 30% of your final mark. It is therefore extremely important for you to be in class.
There are two parts to the assignment: the sample board and the scale model of the room (1/2”=1’)
Your room needs to have the following items;
ü Max. room size may not exceed 400 sq. ft. or 37 sq. meters.
ü at least one door and window
ü at least 5 objects (furniture, carpets, etc)
ü flooring (wood, tile, carpet)
ü paint or wall covering on the walls and ceiling
Describe what type of room you are going to create, what it will be used for and what makes it unique:______

Estimating Your Paint
You will be selecting four different paint colours for your room. One for each of the following; Walls, Trim, Doors and Ceiling. After doing some local research, it was determined that The Home Depot has the best paint at a reasonable price. We will be selecting our paint colours online as well as determining how much paint we will need to purchase.

3. Take a look at the sample project and then click on ‘Start Colour Smart’ button to create your own project
4. Choose a Browse Colours button
5. Select one colour to add to your pallet
6. Add three other colours individually or by using the ‘Coordinate’ option
7. Click the ‘Save Project’ button and use your name as the project title
8. From the project window you will need to complete the following things:
a. ‘Paint Your Place’ - to put your colours in a sample room to see how they look
b. ‘Sheen’ - to assign the colours from your pallet to the parts in the room. Select ‘Eggshell’ for all surfaces except ceiling. Use ‘Flat’ for your ceiling.
c. ‘Calculate’ - to determine out how much paint you need to buy of each colour. Use the ‘Custom’ sized room and enter your room dimensions
9. Save changes as you go along and let me know when you think you are finished.
How Much Paint Will I Need?
Depending on your paint colour, you may need several coats of paint. The darker a paint colour, the MORE coats of paint you will need. These are the general guidelines for the number of coats of paint you’ll need: white – 1 coat, light colours – 2 coats, medium colours – 3 coats, dark colours – 4 coats, and black – 5 coats.
Using the guidelines above, determine the amount of paint you will need to do all the coats for the colours you selected.

There are 4 quarts in 1 gallon. It is cheaper to buy 1 gallon of paint than 4 quarts. Take a look at the total number of quarts you need to buy for each location and see if you can switch some of the quarts for gallons. Show your work below.

How Much Cost of Paint
Step 1: Calculate the total number of Gallons and Quarts you need to paint your room. Use the information from the previous sheet.
Total Number of Gallons = Walls + Trim + Doors + Ceiling
= ______+ ______+ ______+ ______
= ______Gallons
Total Number of Quarts = Walls + Trim + Doors + Ceiling
= ______+ ______+ ______+ ______
= ______Quarts
= ______
Step 4: Calculate the total cost for all of your gallons and quarts
Gallon Quart
= Price x Number of Gallons = Price x Number of Quarts
= ______x ______= ______x ______
= ______= ______
Step 5: Calculate the subtotal for all the paint (total before taxes)
Subtotal = Cost for all the Gallons + Cost for all the Quarts
= ______+ ______
= ______
Flooring
You have five choices for flooring in your room; wood, tile, laminate, carpet or cement. You will figure out the cost of each of these options for your room. You can then make a decision as to the type of flooring you want based on cost and personal preference (style or usefulness).
1. Determine the area of your floor in either square meters and feet.
Option 1: Laminate Flooring
Advantages: Easy to install and clean. Durable.
Disadvantages: Not as aesthetically appealing as wood or tile.
Cost: Each box covers an area of 21 square feet and costs $62.10.
Determine how many boxes of laminate you would need to buy.
What would be the total cost before tax for the laminate flooring?
Option 2: Tile Flooring
Advantages: Very high quality look.
Disadvantages: Difficult to install.
Cost: Each tile covers a square foot. The cost per tile is $13 and installation costs $300.
Determine how many tiles you would need to buy.
What would be the total cost before tax for the tile flooring, including installation?
Option 3: Wood Flooring
Advantages: High quality look.
Disadvantages: Difficult to install and may scratch over time.
Cost: Each wood plank covers 2 square feet. The cost per wood plank is $16 and installation costs $350.
Determine how many wood planks you would need to buy.
What would be the total cost before tax for the tile flooring, including installation?
Option 4: Concrete Flooring
Advantages: Extremely durable and low maintenance.
Disadvantages: Not very pretty.
Cost: Each bag of cement covers 5 square meters. The cost per bag is $20 and installation costs $400.
Determine how many bags of cement you would need to buy.
What would be the total cost before tax for the concrete flooring, including installation?
