S Whillans welcomed everyone to the meeting.
10/11 / Minutes of Previous Meeting – Actions
Students unhappy with PLP’s. H Anderson will take this forward for next session.
Curriculum for Excellence, lack of understanding. Staff have started working on the 4 capacities. The Fire Brigade are due to come in soon for a visit.
Face book/Cyber bullying. L Gilchrist has put in diary to take forward.
Moodle/working at home. Students still having problems. This is ongoing for some students who have older packages at home.
Students felt that assessment questions were marked differently and were not taught the same things that are asked within the questions. P Hutchison raised this at a recent EV visit who will look into this, we are not the only college raising concerns.
PLP’s – Students having difficulty logging on and are going through the process of emailing the helpdesk. Students are being asked to keep reporting issues via the helpdesk.
Catering students asking is the department can start a Game Unit. V MacDonald has looked into this but currently not an option.
Art & Design students asking for an outdoor covered area. V MacDonald has an area planned for after the Easter break.
Art & Design students asking to learn more about photoshop. This is ongoing.
Beauty Therapy students unhappy with some of the Core Skills lecturers. This has been resolved.
11/11 / Activity
Students were split into groups to work on an activity to highlight Strengths and Weaknesses within their programmes.
Work Experience - Strengths
·  Good variety of things to do
·  Gives you a good view of what industry is actually like
·  Looking forward towards really working environment
·  Communication with others
·  Good to be in a proper working environment
·  Easier to pick up on weaknesses
·  Working as part of a team
Work Experience - Weaknesses
·  Feel like what you get to do is very basic compared to what we are learning in college (Hairdressing)
R.W.E - Strengths
·  Art is really good with waste
·  Catering getting better with waste
·  Lifelike like an actual proper working environment
·  Staff and colleagues polite
·  Good equipment
·  Products are good and good food suppliers
·  Storage
R.W.E - Weaknesses
·  Need more clients for the relevant assessments e.g. bikini wax, full leg wax (advertising )
·  Catering really quiet, needs more customers (advertising)
·  Salon could be cleaner
·  Not good lighting in salon in the evening
·  Not much cupboard space
·  Reception could be quicker
·  Area space
Department Equipment and Resources – Strengths
·  Good equipment in the salon
·  Good equipment in the kitchen
·  Happier about outside space
Department Equipment and Resources – Weaknesses
·  Kitchen has a lot of breakages
·  Salon has a lot of spillages
·  Require more good quality straighteners
·  Require better tongs
·  Equipment not put away properly
·  Require better freezer space
·  Most supplies bought by students – discount with suppliers would be helpful
·  Not enough Hair products
Course Design - Strengths
·  Lots of practical in the kitchen
·  Salon runs smoothly
·  Good time for theory
·  Well stretched
·  Tuesday a catch up day
Course Design – Weaknesses
·  Kitchen should have theory straight after practical
·  Salon would like more practical
·  HNC Hairdressing theory time could be spent better
·  HNC Hairdressing requires more printing allowance
·  Too much theory – need more practical in Hairdressing
·  Need to advertise more – not enough clients and customers

12/11 / Focus Group Feedback
L Gilchrist informed the meeting that all classes will receive a Focus Group meeting during the year. These will be summarised on the shared area for Course Tutors/ Programme Leaders to feedback to students.
13/11 / Equality & Diversity
D Killean informed the meeting that the theme for next year will be Gender and Sexuality.
14/11 / Health & Safety
No Issues Raised.
15/11 / AOB
Student Association
D Killean informed the meeting that nominations are being taken for various posts within the Student Association.
The closing date is 31st March 2011 and the election will take place on 27th April 2011. Further information is available from H Chisholm who can be found in the Student Advice Centre.
The new website ‘Tartan Monkey’ will be launched in early April.
Students who attended the Sparqs training were given their certificates.
