Catalog Description:
ARTS 1311. Design I
Introduction to the fundamentals of two-dimensional design with an emphasis on
creative expression using line, value, form, shape, space, texture, and color as it
relates to environment.
Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 3 Semester Credit Hours: 3
Prerequisites: none
Introduction and Purpose:
This course is meant to introduce both art majors and non art majors to the basic concepts and vocabulary in art use them to create interesting compositions.

Objectives/Student Learning Outcomes:
At the completion of this course the student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of basic art vocabulary and terms
2. Be able to explain and critique his/her work and that of other students
3. Demonstrate the use of various materials used in class
4. Demonstrate and understanding of 2- and 3-D composition
5 . Demonstrate the proper use and care of equipment, tools and supplies
6. Recognize various 2-D artists discussed in class
7. To discuss how art plays a role in everyday life
8. Describe various art methods, materials and procedures
9. Demonstrate the ability to use critical thinking skills
The students' success in completing these objectives will be measured using a set of hands-on assignments described in the course outline and will be measured using a set of examinations and assignments described, in detail under the section of this syllabus headed “Methods of Evaluation.”
An Annual Assessment Plan will be implemented each year to review course.
Methods of Instruction:
This course will be taught face-to-face and by various distance learning delivery methods.
Lecture, class discussion, and demonstrations will all be used in this course. Audio-visual materials and computer-based technology will be used when appropriate.
Methods of Evaluation:
Grades in this course will be based on the following evaluative criteria:
Projects will be given during the semester. The average of these projects will make up 75% of the students grades. The comprehensive portfolio review will count 25%.
Letter grades for the course will be based on the following percentages:
90-100% A
80-89% B
70-79% C
60-69% D
Below 60% F

Intended Outcome #1
Students enrolled in ARTS 1311, Design I, will demonstrate an understanding of the appropriate knowledge of the discipline including the following:
1. Basic composition
2. Basic use of art materials including paint
3. Basic color theory and mixing.
4. Design principles
Assessment Measures, Techniques, and Target Courses/Activities:
Students taking Design II will complete a final examination/portfolio in which questions related to key art concepts and terms have been embedded. Faculty will evaluate students/ answers to the embedded questions.
Assessment Criteria/Expected Results:
At least 75 percent of students will answer each embedded question correctly on the final examination.
