Competition Rules as of September 2010

1. All prints must be card mounted & clearly marked with a printed label: Stuck on the reverse, top right hand corner.

The label must include:- Author’s Name, Title, Category, & Date of Entry.

Any print that is not clearly marked will be withdrawn. Prints with the entrant’s name on the front will be rejected. (Just wrote on the back of the print is not allowed)

(A template of the labels will be sent by E-mail prior to Competition night)

2. Mounts to be at the discretion of the entrant but must ensure that entry details and award labels do not damage the print. (A card backing is advisable if back mounting)

Note (Members are warned that judges may take the mount into account when awarding points)

Any print that is liable to cause damage to other prints will be disqualified

(e.g. Velcro pads, poor mounting tape, etc)

3. No Print may be entered more than twice unless it has gained a place in the "ALL WINNERS COMPETITION". All entries must originate from a photographic image (or images) taken by the author. All elements of a picture must be the copyright of the author. Clip-art and royalty-free images are not permitted.

4. No print may be renamed & entered again or printed again after it has gained an award.

5. Entries should be handed to the Competition Secretary prior to start of the competition and not touched, other than by the Appointed Officers of the Club, until after they have been judged and any relevant award label has been stuck on the back of the mount.

6. Only fully paid up Club members are eligible to enter any competitions.

7. Members may enter up to:

3 x Monochrome prints --- (Any size)

3 x Colour prints --- (Any size)

3 x Digital prints (Colour or Monochrome --- (Any size)

8. Competition entry closing time - entries must be sent to the Appointed Officer by 9pm the night before (Before if possible) by E-Mail on the form provided. (Remember that a approx. 60+ photos can be entered each time.)

Late entries will not be accepted.

On any competition night the Baptist Church Hall will be open at 7.15pm. (The Judge should arrive at 7.45pm)

9. Each section will be judged as a separate category.

10. Workshop Competition photos must have been taken at the workshop nights at the club or taken at home with the same technique and theme as the workshop nights.

11. Entries for Set Subject Competitions, No photos to be entered that are more than two (2) years old.

12. Open or General Subject competitions, Photographs must have been taken within two (2) years before the date of entry and may not previously have won an award in B&DPC Photographic Competition.

13. No photograph should repeatedly be entered year after year.

14. Entries in the Monochrome and Colour print categories must be printed using accepted orthodox darkroom techniques or the digital equivalents. (Only minor image adjustment is permitted, such as cropping, sharpening, contrast, and levels.) Prints deemed by the Competition organizers to have been manipulated beyond these limits can only be entered in the Digital print section.

Thus skillful shading and dodging, minimal use of sharpening and removal of incidental artifacts (eg dust marks) will be allowed, but not cloning (eg removal of unsightly telegraph poles, etc).

15. Digital Prints: there are no restrictions on the degree of manipulation allowed for entries in the Digital Print section. No other rules to apply, apart from the rule stated below.

16. Digital Prints only: a small thumbnail print/s of the original must be stuck on the back of the print so that it can be unfolded and be seen by the judge, these small thumbnail prints must be on photographic paper.

17. Monochrome Prints; a black and white image or one which has been modified by the addition of a single tone to the entire image is defined as a monochrome print.

A monochrome image which has been modified by the addition of partial toning or by the addition of one colour to any part of the image must entered into the digital section.

18. Colour Prints; all images except those included in Rule 17 above are defined as colour images. A colour image which has been altered into monochrome but leaving or addition of one colour to any part of the image must be entered into the digital section.

19. By entering, entrants will be deemed to have agreed to be bound by these rules and the B&DPC reserves the right to exclude any entry from the competition at any time and in its absolute discretion if the B&DPC has reason to believe that an entrant has breached these rules.

20. Liability All images are entered at the photographers' risk, and the organizers regret they cannot accept liability for any loss or damage of any pictures entered in the competition (howsoever caused) nor for any other loss or damage resulting there from.

21. The judges' decision is final and no discussion or correspondence can be entered into on their decision, and the judge reserve the right not to make any award if no entries meet the required standard.


22. No alteration of or additions to these rules are to be made except at an AGM or Special General Meeting (SGM) called for that purpose.

(SGM may be held after normal club meetings have finished)
