History

National American University has grown over the years into a fully accredited, four-year university with a diverse curriculum and innovative distance learning technology by remaining focused on meeting the needs of non-traditional students.

In 1941, the institution began as the National School of Business and opened its doors in South Dakota to students who desired specialized business training. Through World War II and the Korean War years, it added courses in accounting, marketing and management to meet the educational needs of returning veterans and the post – war demand for business curriculum.

As word-of-mouth referrals spread between former students, the National American University experienced steady growth which served as a testimony of the effectiveness of the nurturing, educational environment. With NAU’s growing stature in the educational community and regional accreditation, the university soon expanded its base of programs and increased its faculty and staff. New students and transfer students from across the United States as well as foreign countries came to study. National American University campuses have now been established in over 15 different locations nationwide.

In 1996 National American University began to develop online courses to be offered through the emerging resource of the World Wide Web. Since that time the NAU Distance Learning program has created a virtual campus offering degree programs in several academic areas. With the addition of online course offerings and degrees, students have access to learning 24-hours a day from anywhere that the Internet can be accessed.

The curricular offerings include degrees in accounting, general education studies, equine science, information technology, paralegal studies, medical assisting, medical administrative assistant, applied management, business administration, therapeutic massage, athletic training, health care management, nursing, pre-engineering, organizational leadership and veterinary technology. Emphasis areas have been added to the business administration degree and include accounting, e-commerce, financial management, hospitality management, marketing, pre-law and tourism management.

In addition, emphasis areas are available in information technology, including Internet systems development, management information systems, network administration/Microsoft, network management/Microsoft, software development, and in applied management an emphasis area in equine management.

The university also offers several diploma programs. Three are professional diploma programs designed for professionals who want to upgrade their skills in a specific area such as Microsoft networking, information security and software development. The entry-level program, front office support diploma, is designed to prepare students as applications professionals while the veterinary assisting program prepares students to support veterinary technicians and veterinarians in a veterinary practice.

Note: The course offerings differ slightly from one campus to the next based upon student needs or interests in the area.

For specifics on the Austin campus, contact Steve Anthens, Director of Admissions, at (512) 745-7022 for information on the course offerings, schedules and tuition.
