Title / Demonstrate knowledge of Simms Minimec diesel fuel injection pumps, and overhaul them

Purpose / This unit standard is for people in the automotive fuel injection industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of Simms Minimec pump operation and repair procedures; dismantle a Simms Minimec pump and complete an inspection report; renew and replace pump components and reassemble pump; and bench test a Minimec fuel injection pump assembly and adjust settings.

Explanatory notes

1 The following legislation and amendments are required to be consulted and followed where applicable:

Health and Safety in Employment Act, 1992.

2 Reference to suitable tools and workshop equipment means industry approved tools and equipment that are recognised within the industry as being the most suited to complete the task to a professional and competent manner with due regard to safe working practices.

3 Because of the particular nature of this unit standard, it is essential that the practical assessment evidence is obtained from commercial jobs in the workplace under normal workplace conditions.

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of Simms Minimec pump operation and repair procedures.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Pump construction is described according to fuel injection pump manual description.

Range features, identification of components, layout of components.

1.2 Pump operation is explained according to fuel injection pump manual explanation.

Range pumping action, delivery, controls, advance devices, cold start.

1.3 The importance of cleanliness when working with fuel injection components is identified.

Range contamination, precise machining tolerances and close operating fits of components, damage and premature failure.

1.4 Faults which affect the fuel pump operation are described according to fuel injection pump manual description.

Range fuel contamination, misalignment of fuel pump and drive train, timing advance, injector seal leakage, incorrect adjustments.

1.5 Wear patterns on components are described according to fuel injection pump manual description.

Range fuel contamination, misalignment, lack of lubrication, corrosion, abrasion, cavitation.

1.6 Pump repair procedures are described according to fuel injection pump manual description.

Range cleaning, testing, dismantling, overhauling, reassembling.

Outcome 2

Dismantle a Simms Minimec pump and complete an inspection report.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Safe working practices are observed throughout the task.

Range personal safety, safety of others, equipment safety.

2.2 Suitable tools and workshop equipment are selected and used, to enable the pump assembly to be dismantled and inspected.

2.3 The fuel pump assembly is dismantled on a stripping jig according to manufacturer's instructions.

2.4 All parts are cleaned to enable an inspection to be carried out.

2.5 A condition report is completed and given to the supervisor.

Range inspection of parts, identifying and recording faults, recommending repairs and replacement of parts.

Outcome 3

Renew and replace pump components and reassemble pump.

Evidence requirements

3.1 Safe working practices are observed throughout the task.

Range personal safety, safety of others, equipment safety.

3.2 Suitable tools and workshop equipment are selected and used, to enable the components to be replaced and the pump assembly to be reassembled according to manufacturer's specifications.

3.3 All parts that are determined as requiring replacement are ordered from a supplier.

Range interpreting parts catalogues, using updates and supersessions, obtaining pricing and delivery details.

3.4 The pump is reassembled with new and existing parts according to manufacturer's instructions and specifications.

Outcome 4

Bench test a Minimec fuel injection pump assembly and adjust settings.

Evidence requirements

4.1 Safe working practices are observed throughout the task.

Range personal safety, safety of others, equipment safety, safety precautions when working with high pressure fuel.

4.2 Suitable tools and workshop equipment are selected and used, to enable the pump assembly to be tested and adjustments made according to manufacturer's specifications.

4.3 The fuel pump assembly is mounted and set up for testing and setting on a test bench according to manufacturer's instructions.

4.4 The fuel pump assembly is tested, and settings made according to manufacturer's specifications.

Range calibration and phase, timing mark checked.

4.5 The fuel pump assembly is removed from the test bench with fuel inlets and adjustments sealed.
