Program description: The purpose of this service learning project is to build a kitchen and initiate a food program at Mburu Gichua primary school in Nakuru. It is also to give the participants a unique cultural experience, giving them a broader perspective of the world we live in. After seeing the need for the food program, a unique partnership of private individuals, business, Casper College and UW/CC initiated this service learning opportunity to enable participants to help more than 500 students at Mburu Gichua, and to “learn by doing.” The trip combines hands-on work experience helping to build the kitchen and dining hall with the opportunity to go on “Safari” to experience the wonderful people of Kenya, their culture, and wildlife. In addition, lectures by renowned educatorswill provide other critical insights. Course is limited to 25 participants. Non-credit seeking participants are welcome.

Travel to Kenya on 7/16/2011 through 7/27/2011.

This program is designed for participants who enjoy learning in unfamiliar settings such as culture and nature. Participants will experience the following indoors and outdoors activities each day in the company of others:

Itinerary (subject to revision)

Day 1:-Sat 16th July / Nairobi – On arrival at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at 1:00 am, you will be met and transferred to Nairobi Safari Club. Bed and breakfast is provided. Rest till 9:30 am
10:00am –11:00 am - Breakfast
11:30am -12:45 pm – Introduction, followed by a lecture on history and culture of the people of Kenya.
1:00pm- Travel to Nakuru through the highlands (formerly white highlands) down the escarpment to the Great Rift Valley.
Lunch Break own your own.
Check in at Flamingo Lodge
3:30 pm- Visit construction site
Overnight at Flamingo Lodge on Bed, breakfast and lunch.
Day 2: Sun 17th July / Nakuru-Menengai crater
10:30 am - After breakfast, proceed to the construction site.
After lunch, experience an excursion to Menengai Crater- an extinct volcano, 8km north of Nakuru. You can get right to the rim and there are some great views to be seen over the forest below
Return to the lodge for lunch and a relaxed afternoon.

Day 3:Mon 18th July / Nakuru-School construction
08:30- Proceed to construction site.

Day 6: Thu 21st July / Nakuru-Cultural day
06:30- 8:00 am- Breakfast
9:00- Proceed to construction site.
BBQ lunch arranged by the school
After lunch, visit marigiti open air market, railway station, meet with the locals. Proceed to Hyrax Hill Historic site. Learn about Sirikwa tribe (almost extinct) sun-tribe of Nandi community.
Alternatively visit Menengai Crater.

Day 7: Fri 22nd July / Lake Nakuru National Park
After breakfast, visit Lake Nakuru National Park . Lake Nakuru has earned its fame as the home of the greatest bird spectacle in the world. The abundnace of lions, leopards, buffaloes, and other Savannah and forest game makes game viewing a lifetime adventure. While enjoying lunch at Lake Nakuru Lodge, listen to a lecture by Lake Nakuru’s enviromenatlist,John Kuria)

Day 8: Sat 23nd July / SWEETWATERS LUXURY CAMP-: After breakfast, travel to the school site to tie loose ends before heading to Sweetwaters arriving in time for lunch. Sweetwaters Luxury tented camp is a 22,000-acre rhino sanctuary. Apart from offering an excellent opportunity to get close to the endangered black rhino, Sweetwaters is home to lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and plenty of other Savannah game and endangered chimpanzee. Afternoon spent game viewing. Dinner and overnight at Sweetwaters Luxury Tented Camp
Day 9: Sun 24th July / Mt. Kenya- Mountain Lodge - After breakfast continue to Mt. Kenya National Park arriving in good time for lunch at Mountain Lodge Tree Hotel. Lunch, dinner and overnight at Mountain Lodge Tree Hotel. The lodge is situated deep in the forest. As you take 4 o’clock tea / coffee, the resident naturist will give a lecture on the ecology, history and wildlife of Mount Kenya National Park. Throughout the day and night forest animals visit the waterhole and saltlick, to ensure you many exciting moments.
Day 10:Mon 25th July / Nairobi - Departure
After breakfast, drive back to Nairobi.
Lunch at Karen Blixen hotel (on your own account). After lunch, visit Kazuri Beads Center before transferring to the airport for your outbound flight back home.
