Class Lesson: The Defeat of the Spanish Armada

Historical Context: Henry VII of England and Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain tried to create a strong alliance between their two countries with the marriage of 2 of their children. However, in a matter of decades, Spain and England became bitter rivals, for many reasons. Firstly, Spain was deeply insulted by the treatment of Catherine of Aragon and her daughter Mary Tudor by Henry VIII. Secondly, Spain, a devoutly Catholic country, was horrified when England became Protestant. Thirdly, during the Age of Exploration, England’s celebrated privateer (essentially a legal pirate) Sir Francis Drake repeatedly captured Spanish ships returning from the New World, stealing the gold and other riches on board. As a result, Philip II of Spain (grandson of Ferdinand and Isabella and nephew of Catherine of Aragon) was determined to restore Catholicism to England while simultaneously weakening his rival. He tried several peaceful means, include marrying the Catholic Mary Tudor (his cousin) and trying to marry the Catholic Mary, Queen of Scots (who was the heir to the English throne if the Protestant Elizabeth had no children). When those plans failed however, he decided to send his “invincible” armada to invade the country and overthrow the queen. Elizabeth and England put up a brilliant fight and had a lot of luck on their side; the Spanish Armada was not only defeated, it was largely destroyed.
