Chemistry Chapter Objectives

Chapter 12- Solutions

Chapter 12 Objectives

Section 1 – Types of Mixtures

1. Compare heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures.

2. Define and distinguish between electrolytes and nonelectrolytes..

3. Define and distinguish between suspensions, colloids and solutions.

Section 2 The Solution Process

1. Explain the three factors that influence the rate of dissolving of a solid in a liquid.

2. Define and distinguish between unsaturated, saturated and supersarturated.

3. Explain the phrase “like dissolves like.”

4. Describe the three interactions involved in heat of solution and what causes heat to be absorbed or released.

5. Explain how temperature and pressure affect solubility

Secton 3 – Concentrations of Solutions

1. Define and calculate percent by mass, molarity, molality and mole fraction.

Molarity (M = moles solute/ liters solution)

Molality (m = moles solute/ kg solvent)

Mole fraction X = moles solute or sovent/ moles solute + moles solvent

PPM (parts per million)
