Chapter 3 – Building Self Esteem

Self Esteem – is a measure of how much you value, respect, and feel confident about yourself.

High Self Esteem –

· Can help a person have a positive outlook on life.

· Helps a person achieve success.

· People with high self-esteem share similar traits.

· Feel good about themselves

· Like themselves

· They have a high level of confidence

· They do not feel inferior to others

· They are not affected by negative comments from others

Low Self Esteem – May keep a person from enjoying life

· They do not feel good about themselves

· They do not like themselves

· They often think they have no positive traits

· They have low self confidence

· They have trouble with relationships

· They are often affected by negative comments

Body Image – is the way you see and imagine your body.

Self-Concept – is the way you see and imagine yourself as a person.

Academic Self-Concept – is the way you see yourself as a student.

Physical Self-Concept – is the way you see your physical abilities.

Social Self-Concept – is the way you see yourself in your relationships.

Integrity – is your honesty with yourself and others and taking responsibility for your actions so that others can trust you.

Assertive – acting on your thoughts and values in a firm, positive way.
