Guidance Information

1This unit standard is intended for, but not restricted to, workplace assessment. The range statements across the unit standard can be applied according to industry specific equipment, procedures and processes.

2Safety of personnel and plant must be a priority throughout the assessment. If the safety requirements are not met the assessment must stop.

3Performance and work practices in relation to the outcomes andperformance criteria must comply with all current legislation, especially the Electricity Act 1992, and any regulations and codes of practice recognised under that statute; the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015; and the Resource Management Act 1991. Electricity supply industry codes of practice and documented industry procedures include the current version of the Safety Manual – Electricity Industry (SM-EI)Wellington: Electricity Engineers’ Association. 4The phrase in accordance with industry requirements is implicit in all outcomes and performance criteria in this unit standard.

5Industry requirements include all asset owner requirements; manufacturers’ specifications; and enterprise requirements which cover the documented workplace policies, procedures, specifications, business, and quality management requirements relevant to the workplace in which assessment is carried out.

6Coal handling equipment includes overland system, stock-out system, bunkering system, reclaiming system.

Performance criteria

1.1Coal handling equipment, location, power supplies, and operations are described.

Rangeincludes but is not limited to – conveyors, crushers, screens, feeders, magnetic separators, flap gates, sampling systems, belt weighs, bins, chutes, hoppers, bunkers.

1.2Operating parameters are identified.

Rangeincludes but is not limited to – coal condition, equipment condition, conveyor loading ratings.

Outcome 2

Operate and monitor coal handling equipment in a thermal electricity generation power station.

Performance criteria

2.1Current status of equipment is identified.

2.2Operations are carried out.

Rangeincludes but is not limited to – equipment trip resets, monitor equipment, cleaning, manual bunker filling.

2.3Operating decisions are determined.

Rangeincludes but is not limited to – plant availability and service condition, resource consent and loading limits, impact on operations, options.

Outcome 3

Identify and respond to deviations in the normal operation of coal handling equipment.

Performance criteria

3.1Deviations from normal operating conditions are identified, reported and acted upon.

Rangeincludes but is not limited to – blockages, ripped or damaged conveyor belts, festooning, hot coal, excessively dusty coal, wet coal, conditions requiring emergency shutdown, conveyor anti runback device failure, equipment maloperation, trips.

3.2Plant safety, fire and emergency procedures are followed.

Rangeincludes but is not limited to – thermal detectors, smoke detectors, fire-wire, oil spills, manual break-glass switches, fire hydrant boxes, fire detection zoning, sprinklers, hose reels, hydrant fire pumps, booster pumps.
