Chapter 10 vocabulary

1. Moses - Leader and prophet chosen by God to free his people from slavery in

Egypt and lead them into the Promised Land.

2. Aaron - brother of Moses; the first high priest of the Hebrews.

3. Midian - land north of Arabia and east of Egypt.

4. Nile River - longest river in the world, stretching from the Burundi, east Africa,

to the Mediterranean Sea.

5. Reuel - Moses' father-in-law, also called Jethro.

6. Exodus - God's liberation of the Hebrew people from slavery in Egypt and his

leading them to the Promised Land; second book of the Hebrew Scripture.

7. Passover - Jewish feast that recalls and celebrates the Exodus.

8. seder - Jewish ceremonial dinner held the night of Passover. God is praised as the

story of his saving love is told, especially the deliverance of the Chosen People

out of Egypt.

9. matzoh - flat, thin pieces of unleavened bread eaten by Jewish people during

Passover.

10. unleavened - containing no yeast.

11. Red Sea - an inlet of the Indian Ocean between Africa and Asia.

12. consecration - the part of the Eucharistic Prayer when the Lord's words at the

Last Supper are recited by the priest, making Christ's Body and

Blood present under the appearances of bread and wine.

13. Lectionary - official book containing the readings for the liturgy for all Sundays

and the weekdays of the year.

14. votive Masses - Eucharistic celebrations of the mysteries of the Lord or

honoring Mary and the saints.

15. Liturgy of the Word - first part of the Mass, in which we hear the story of our

salvation.

16. Liturgy of the Eucharist - second part of the Mass, in which Jesus offers himself

to us and we are united and strengthened as God's people.

17. plagues - a series of ten disasters in Egypt, sent by God, after which the Pharaoh

allowed the Israelites to leave.
