MCI – WorldCom 1984 to 2002

Sr. Engineer – Vendor Technical Manager (Cross-connect Engineering)

Vendor Technical Manager (VTM) for the selection and implementation of SONET and SDH based cross-connect systems for the MCI-WorldCom network. The equipment included:

A. Narrowband (DS0 Matrix) - Tellabs 5320, 5320L, 532E and Alcatel 1630 (DS1 to DS3 rates including subrates)

B. SONET Wideband (VT1.5 Matrix) – Tellabs 5500, 6400 and Alcatel 1631 (DS1, DS3, OC3 and OC12)

C. SDH Wideband (VC12 Matrix) - Marconi MSH 83 and 84 for international gateways (E1, E3, DS3 G747, STM-1, STM-4 and STM-16)

D. Broadband (STS1 matrix) - Alcatel 1633 and 1680 (DS3, STS1, OC3, OC12 and OC48)

E. High Density Broadbands - Ciena CoreDirector and Sycamore SN16000 (OC3, OC12 and OC192)

Responsibilities:

A. Coordination with engineering planning, operations group and back office systems developers in generating software and hardware requirements for the above systems that will be provided to the appropriate vendor(s) for development.

B. Responsible for producing Vendor Test Requirements Document (VTRD) for new load verification, and Product Integration Document (PIRD) to ensure that both incoming software and hardware are compatible with existing equipment in the network such as OADM’s, ADM’s, DWDM’s, routers, switches and other cross-connect systems.

C. Responsible for ensuring that appropriate equipment can support line protection and restoration schemes such as linear APS (1+1, 1:N, 1:0), UPSR, 2/4 fiber BLSR and MESH.

D. Project managed the first SDH gateway cross-connect for the MCI-WorldCom international network. This included equipment selection, pricing, feature functionalities, testing, installation and cut-over.

E. Acted as a technical consultant and VTM for Narrowband and SDH systems for the MCI Mexico Avantel project. Saved the project $1.8 million for recommendations leading to proper system cable routing as well as DC power and grounding arrangements.

F. Responsible for the statistical calculation and recommendations of cross-connect hub spares for the company wide management sparing initiative.

Sr. Engineer – Network Systems

Engineered and implemented the first MCI synchronization network 2 months ahead of schedule and on budget. The project included the following responsibilities:

A. Representation to the ANSI T1X1.3 sync. working group

B. Determination of synchronization islands and equipment stratum hierarchy

C. Analytical testing of various synchronization sources including Cesium, Rubidium based clocks, Loran-C and GPS receiver systems.

D. Field tech training on proper equipment synchronization application and procedures

Program Manager for Nortel DMS 250 switch E-CORE/E-IOC expansion program

Headed the Site Performance Evaluation Program (site performance quality control)

American Satellite Co. (Subsidiary of Continental Telephone) – 1981 to 1984

Central Office Engineering Manager

Managed the daily work activities of 15 engineers in the design, equipment selection, cost analysis, construction and expansion of ASC’s central offices.

Transmission Engineering Manager – International

Managed daily activities of 5 transmission engineers assigned to the Middle East project. The group was responsible for the design of the first fiber optic system and hybrid digital radios for Jubail, Saudi Arabia. Developed and implemented a comprehensive power and protection program for the area Central Offices.

Network Systems Administrator

Planned and developed system wide transmission, protection and power maintenance program. The program included Central Offices (DMS 10, 100 and 200, Vidar ITS 4 and 5, Stromberg DCO and NEC NEAX 61, Digital Microwave Radios, Cable Carriers, Subscriber Carriers, Channel Banks, Rectifiers and Battery Plant.

Provided technical assistance to field related transmission and protection issues, up to and including commission complain investigations.

Plant Transmission Engineer

Responsible for cable acceptance for VF, FDM and PCM systems applications. Mitigated discrepancies found in commercial power system affecting plant performance. Evaluated and recommended solutions to various plant transmission and protection issues in the state of Virginia.

Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. - 1967 to 1972

Transmission Engineer

Engineered Line-of -Sight backbone and light route microwave systems. Supervised radio and tower installations. Performed noise mitigation and resolved grounding issues. Co-engineered the first double passive reflectors in the Far East. Company instructor for digital transmission.
