Comparison of Neolithic Settlements

This assignment has three parts which will be assessed: the drawing, the questions, and a class discussion based on your research. PART III – class discussion on BOTH labs .

PART I - Divide your paper into four quadrants and do the following: use your color pencils!

1. In UL (upper left) draw a regional map of the area where Catal Huyuk is found.

2. In LL draw a map of Europe and Asia showing where Catal Huyuk is found.

3. In UR draw a view down of a section of the houses.

4. In LR draw a panoramic view of the town. (as if you were standing outside of the city looking straight at it)

PART II - Research the web sites and write out the answers to the following questions: (do a thorough job on this because you will be able to use your answers during our class discussion)

1. Why was Catal Huyuk located where it was located? What are its natural and situational advantages?

2. How many people lived in Catal Huyuk at its height?

3. What was the agricultural base?

4. What animals did they raise? (domesticated)

5. What types of tools did the people use?

6. What kinds of pottery did the people make?

7. What evidence exists of trade?

8. What types of art existed at Catal Huyuk?

9. What were the common subjects of the art?

10. What evidence is there of religious practices?

11. What were the “shrines”?

12. Describe the type of “government” which archaeologists speculate was prevalent at Catal Huyuk?

13. Did the population of Catal Huyuk have any enemies?

14. Why did Catal Huyuk decline in importance?

15. Compare Catal Huyuk and Jericho. What were the advantages of the structure at Catal Huyuk? At Jericho? The disadvantages? Why was Jericho a longer-lived site than Catal Huyuk? Why did the structure of Jericho, that is walls and a tower, survive as the standard design?
