Year 1 Class Newsletter - Autumn 2017
Dear Parents/Carers,
Welcome back to a new school year. We hope that you had a fantastic holiday and that you’re feeling ready for the new school term. We have lots of exciting things in store and can’t wait to get started!
Your teacher this year is Rebecca Mann, with Debs Das supporting us from Monday to Wednesday and Karen Waters from Wednesday to Friday.
Curriculum
Our Autumn term topic for Year 1 and 2 is “Earthly Treasures”. Within this topic, we will be studying all curriculum subjects, with an emphasis on Geography and Science in our discovery of natural treasures found around the world.
English
In line with the Year 1 national curriculum, we will be focusing on stories with predictable phrasing this term. Children will encounter fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts and will have the opportunity to write in a range of styles. We will be particularly focusing on labels, lists and captions; and narratives. Our skill focus will be on continuing to expand the children’s phonics knowledge and working hard on our handwriting.
Maths:
Our key targets for this term are:
-To learn number bonds to 5, 10 and 20
-To read and write the number 1-20 in numbers and words.
Any home support you can give your children to meet these targets would be beneficial for the children’s progress in class.
In addition to this, we will be working hard to deepen our understanding of the number system, beginning to learn about measurement using non-standard units, and starting to identify properties of 2D-shapes.
Reading
All children are expected to bring to school with them their reading books and green reading records every day, and should be reading at home regularly. Please fill in your child’s reading record after they have read. Library books will be changed each Friday.
Parents and carers are invited into school on the first Friday of each month for family reading time. Dates for this are:
Friday 6th October @ 2.50pm
Friday 3rd November @ 2.50pm
Friday 1st December @ 2.50pm
Homework
English, Maths and Topic homework will be set using a grid system. You should choose one activity each week from the grid to complete. We will also send home a set of “key words” for your children to practice reading and spelling. Please have a read of our school homework policy on the school website and encourage your child to complete their homework to the best of their ability and to return it by Tuesday each week. This will be marked and returned each Friday.
PE Kits
Our PE days are Monday and Wednesday. Please ensure your child has a full, labelled PE kit, including outdoor shoes on these days. It is helpful to keep PE kits in school in case the days change. We will also be doing a lap of the new running track every day as part of the Daily Mile initiative.
KS1 production
Our production this term will be on Tuesday 28th and Wednesday 29th November. Times and details will follow nearer the time. This is a brilliant opportunity to come and see your children perform!
If you wish to speak to any of the Year 1 team or have any worries or queries, please do not hesitate to make a time to speak to us or pop in at the end of the school day.
Best wishes,
Rebecca Mann, Debs Das and Karen Waters.
