Plastic Technology II

PROCEDURE:

1)  Develop solutions by creating 4 Thumbnail Sketches.

a.  Indicate approx. size (4”x4” max), colors, tiers)

2)  Find an image on the internet that contains one significant area of color and is of interest to you.

3)  Save the image to your H: drive on the high school server.

4)  Create a final Single Idea Sketch that is detailed and dimensioned.

5)  Once the final design is chosen, use Photoshop to:

a.  Create a new document that is your desired

magnet size *Make sure units are set to Inches

i.  Set resolution to 300

ii.  Set Color mode to CMYK

b.  Go to window and select Layers, Tools & Navigator.

c.  Edit your image as needed

d.  Change image to one solid color (black)

6)  Save as a PDF.

7)  Create a new Adobe Illustrator Document that is no larger than (4 ½” x 4 ½”).

8)  Next, go to File place and place your PDF image onto your layout.

9)  Use the Selection Tool (V) to scale the image to fit into your layout.

a.  *Remember to hold shift to keep the image proportional.

10) Once scaling is complete, select the image and go to the Object tab Live Trace Make & Expand. *Your image should become B/W and be vectored.

11) The image will now have several blue selection points indicated.

12) Next, place a NO Fill to your image and set the Stroke color to black. Set your stroke (line weight) to 0.1 pt. (Refer to Fig. 2)

·  Delete any unwanted cut lines with the Direct Selection Tool (A). All cut lines need to be indicated as a faint gray not dark black.

*You cannot have duplicate cut lines.

13.  If you are adding any text to be engraved “Rastered”, use the text tool to place the text on your image.

14.  Save your work in your student drive as an Adobe Illustrator file.

15.  Print a proof of the design and show instructor for approval. ______

16.  Print with Marks and Bleed selected and all Printers Marks designated. (Refer to Fig. 3)

17.  Now you are ready to engrave.

18.  Cut out the appropriate color acrylic to

4 ½“ x 4 ½”.

19.  Prep the Epilog Laser Engraver. (Auto Focus the table Down)

20.  Use the appropriate settings for Vector cutting: (or for a Combination Setting)

21.  Make sure the exhaust and pump are turned on.

22.  Run the job.

23.  Clean all vector cut pieces.

24.  Mount pieces to card stock using rubber cement and cut away unwanted card stock.

25.  Hot glue magnets in place and submit project with design work.

SUBMISSION:

1.  Thumbnail sketches of design. (at least 4)

2.  Single Idea Sketch

3.  Computer proof printout of design in Adobe Illustrator.

4.  Signature of peer check of appropriate cut lines ______

5.  Final Magnet
