STAGE 3: LEARNING PLAN
Lesson 1
Warm up - Popcorn
-  Teacher stands in the middle of the gym with a large box of balls.
-  Teacher throws balls randomly around the gym
-  Students run to pick up the balls and return them to the box.
Inquiry –
-  What does underhand throwing look like?
-  What parts of the skill can you remember?
*Use a small soft ball
Activity - Show what you know
-  In partners
-  First partner throws the ball across the gym to explore proper technique.
-  Thrower retrieves the ball and switches with his partner
-  Teacher corrects form as necessary
-  Students can observe their partners form for accuracy
Variation – Teacher stands in the middle of gym while students aim at teacher
-  Hold a hula hoop as a target / Transfer of Learning

Lesson 2
Warm up - Tag
Inquiry – Review to steps in an underhand throw.
-  Post the steps in your gym
Activity – Crystal Ball
-  Students stand on opposing lines, facing each other (relatively close)
-  Students perform a good underhand throw to their partner.
-  If 2 successful throws and catches are made, both partners take a step backwards to increase the throwing distance.
-  If 2 more successful catches are made, partners can move backwards again.
-  Continue until the crystal ball is dropped and smashed, and return to the starting lines to try again.
Variations :
-  How many catches in 1 minute
-  How many catches in a row without dropping the ball
-  3rd partner goes to the middle with a hula hoop. Partners must make a successful throw through the hoop and catch. / Transfer of Learning

Lesson 3
Warm up – Tag
Activity – Throw and Go
-  Divide class into 6 even teams (teams 1-6)
-  Clearly number 6 beanbags (or small balls) 1-6 and give them to the respective teams.
-  Teams line up at one end of the gym.
-  First person in each group closes their eyes and holds their beanbag
-  On the signal from the teacher, the first person throws their bean bag with their eyes closed out in the gym area.
-  On the next signal from the teacher, the throwing student runs out into the gym area to search for their beanbag.
-  If they find the wrong beanbag, they may throw it to a new place in the gym
-  The first team to find their own beanbag and return it to the next person in line, wins / Transfer of Learning

Lesson 4
Warm up - Crystal Ball
-With 3rd person in the middle with a hula hoop
Activity – Lily Pads Relay (MWM pg. 127 variation)
-  Divide class into even teams
-  Set up 4-5 hula hoops in a straight line in front of each team, with a target at the end.
-  The first person on each team, makes a good underhand throw to the first hoop (lily pad). If successful, continue on to the next hoop. Continue to the last hoop and throw the bean bag at the wall target.

Lesson 5 - Stations
Station 1 – Bucket Toss
-  Students underhand throw beanbags to buckets on the floor.
-  Vary the distances
-  Option – Apply points to buckets.
Station 2 – Beanbag Survivor
-  Set up 3 hoops in a straight line getting further away. Put a bowling pin at the end of the hoops
-  Underhand throw a beanbag to the closest hoop
-  You cannot move onto the second hoop until you have successfully thrown a beanbag into the first one, then the 3rd and then the bowling pin.
-  First team to knock over the pin wins
Station 3 – Beat The Ball (MWM pg.129)
-  Throw a ball to the wall and attempt to catch it.
-  Use different distances, and use different types of balls
Station 4 – Hoop Bounce (MWM pg. 132)
-  Place several bowling pins around a hula hoop.

Lesson 6 – Underhand Throw Assessment
Assessment Stations
-  Create 4 stations for the kids to rotate through
-  1 station will be for assessing the kids underhand throwing ability
-  The other 3 stations should be low-supervisory stations so that the bulk of your attention can be on the assessment
-  Assessment for grade 2 should be: 3 meter underhand throw to a target on a wall. Allow for several repetitions to ensure that the student is consistent
-  Examples of other stations could be: balance, targets, rolling, scoops and balls, bouncing, kicking at a target).
These are good reviews of previous units and future units. / Transfer of Learning
