1. DEDICATION

I dedicate my efforts to my loving parents, my friends, colleagues, all staff of CIIT Wah Campus, kind teachers who have not only been a source of motivation to me but also extended their help whenever needed. Without their help and motivation it would have not possible for me to do all this.

2. PREFACE

To become the part of a reputable institution has always been wish of each and every student. Learning frequently and rapidly is every day aspect of COMSATS. Also the learning becomes more effective when some practical works and exercises are assigned to the students, which ultimately help them to groom up in a more professional way.

In view of this I have done 8-weeks internship in COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Wah campus that is mandatory for all the students who have been enrolled in MBA Program.

I am very thankful to Mr. Arshad Ahmed Butt, Deputy Registrar CIIT Wah Campus who helped me in order to complete this internship report. He has not only guided me how to cope up with my work but also helped me by giving important tips whenever I was stuck in some problems.

In the end I must say that it was a healthy exercise and experience for me and I learned a lot from it. This will ultimately help understand how different departments in an organization work and how an organization works in its environment.

3. ACKNOWLEDGMENT

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

All praises be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds, The Beneficent and the Merciful. Owner of the Day of Judgment, Thee (alone) we worship; Thee alone we ask for help. Show us the straight path, the path of those whom Thou hast favored; Not (the path) of those who earn Thine anger nor of those who astray.

(Al-Quran)

Thanks are due to ALLAH Almighty Whose kind grace enabled me to accomplish this report. I also pay my gratitude to my loving parents, kind teachers especially Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, Member (Planning & Operations), Higher Education Commission who have not only been a source of motivation to me but also extended their help whenever needed. 7. Brief Introduction of the Organization’s Business Sector

The organization relates to the Education Sector of Pakistan and working as Public Sector Organization under the control of Higher Education Commission of Pakistan and Ministry of Science & Technology (MoST). Education comes from 'eduction' which means to make visible what is latent. To be educated really is to have a fire lit inside that allows one to think, rationalize, contemplate on the mysteries of the universe, and understand events and situations to which solutions are proposed. Being educated does not simply mean being able to solve differential equations: it is much more. The world over, universities provide education in all subjects with the first degree imparted after a period of four years. This allows the student to explore his/her interests, understand related areas, specialize in core subjects while also developing as a caring, communicative human being who knows how to harness the powers of information technology. During the past year numerous institutions from the University of Sindh to the University of Peshawar have introduced four-year honors bachelor's degree programs, and it is hoped that the students of biology and mathematics in Pakistan, may once again understand the message of Iqbal.

Since 2001, the Higher Education sector in Pakistan has undergone a dramatic renaissance. The realization of the Government of Pakistan of the importance of higher education in contributing to sustainable socio-economic development, as well as poverty reduction, stimulated a chain of events that led to the establishment of the Higher Education Commission. Founded by Presidential Ordinance on September 11, 2002, following the recommendations of the 'Task Force on Higher Education', the Higher Education Commission inherited a higher education system having a myriad of problems. While concrete progress has been made in improving the state of higher education, an impact will only be possible if the reform process that has been initiated is sustained, supported and strengthened.

Since 2002, the higher education sector in Pakistan has witnessed the launch of a sea change of initiatives by the Higher Education Commission that have fundamentally altered the higher education landscape. Change is visible in all the universities and degree awarding institutions in Pakistan. There is excitement in the air in these institutions, and scholars and researchers are beginning to roam the hallways of knowledge once again. The change is physically manifested in the restored buildings, new classrooms, new laboratories, computers, jogging tracks and state-of-the art libraries.

New universities, such as the University of Faisalabad and the University of Sargodha, have risen in the heartland of Pakistan; the Balochistan University of Information Technology and Management Sciences provides state-of-the art IT and management science education to thousands of students, while Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur has a new laboratory and library building.

The real success of the HEC development programs is not however manifested in the restored campus buildings and wireless 'hot spots', it is visible in the hearts and minds of the faculty and students, who are publishing once again in international journals (up more than 40% in the last two years), it is apparent on the faces of the students searching the Digital Library archives to complete a psychology assignment. One reason that universities are set up is so that, “common good, just laws, human reason and prudence might develop and grow (University of Vienna, Manifesto 1365)”. The HEC has endeavored to bring this spirit back, which is also our Islamic heritage. Logic, philosophy and mathematics used to be a hallmark of an 'education'. With the elimination of undergraduate education from the universities, and the consolidation of the two-year bachelor degree in colleges, universities in Pakistan had ended up merely catering to the provision of post-graduate studies.

8. Overview of the Organization:-

COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT), one of the leading IT institutes in Pakistan, became functional in 1998, and attained the status of degree awarding institute on 12th August, 2000.

CIIT, in a short span of time, has proven itself to be a world-class university dedicated to creating a knowledge base in the areas of science and technology by proactively participating in scientific research and development. CIIT aims to educate and groom leaders for the 21st century by imparting quality education and training in the field of technology.

CIIT is fully equipped to handle the dynamics of the fast paced IT & Telecom industries and therefore adopts a proactive and flexible approach to anticipate and meet the challenges of future developments on the technological front. The basic function of CIIT is to train the country’s human resource in the field of Information Technology so as to equip them to deal effectively with emerging IT trends. CIIT focuses on the delivery of new ideas, products and services through research, development and education. This is being done through a strategic partnership with IT & Telecom organizations in general and IT & Telecom industries in particular.

The Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS) is an international organization, aiming at socio-economic uplift of the third world through useful applications of science and technology. Established in October 1994, COMSATS currently represents 21 developing countries across three continents.

The idea of the joint commission of countries in the South originally came from Prof. Dr. Abduls Salam, the Noble Laureate, in acknowledgement of the increasingly widening gap of knowledge and technology between the North and the South. It was realized that sustainable socio-economic development in the South cannot be achieved without building and sustaining indigenous capacities in science and technology and that the strengthening of South-South and North-South collaboration and exchange of resources is imperative for generation and sustenance of such capacities. Professor Salam's enthusiasm and personal approach motivated a number of political leaders / heads of state of developing nations in the South to join forces with COMSATS.

The foundation-conference of COMSATS, which was held at Islamabad on 4th & 5th October, 1994, attracted representation from thirty-six countries. The participants included twenty-two Ministers, members of the diplomatic community of Islamabad and representatives of international organizations, like UNESCO, UNIDO, UNEP, and the World Bank. The conference decided that the Headquarters / Secretariat of the Commission would be based permanently at Islamabad, Pakistan, and the Head of State of Pakistan would act as the first Chairperson of the forum. It was agreed that the host-government, Pakistan, would provide for the operational and administrative expenses of the Secretariat, while the development programs of the Commission would be supported and financed through Technical Assistance Fund, formed of membership-contributions, income from services, and international grants/project-funds.

The designated Focal Points (relevant state-bodies/ministries/R & D institutions) in the member states, Centers of Excellence and the diplomatic community serve as the official channels for coordinating the activities of COMSATS. Currently CIIT is imparting education to over 5000 students nationwide. With its headquarters in Islamabad, CIIT also has Campuses at Islamabad, Lahore, Wah, Abbottabad, Attock and Sahiwal.

I. COMSATS Institute of Information Technology Islamabad Campus.

The CIIT Islamabad happens to be the very first campus of this prestigious institution that also holds the position of being the Principal campus. From a humble beginning, the CIIT has transformed itself into a prodigious educational entity of Pakistan. Definitely, the role of CIIT Islamabad is more than just being the first ever setup of this marvelous education system, which is now one of the most celebrated educational institutions and excels in imparting quality education in various cities of Pakistan.

CIIT Islamabad was established in 1998 in a building rented from HEC in Sector H-8/1. The growth of the CIIT Islamabad is definitely miraculous when it has barely completed its first decade of existence. It was obviously a bumpy ride but the credit goes to the assiduous members of the team whose perpetual hard work and impeccable planning has made the journey possible. The present campus of CIIT Islamabad, located in sector H-8 covers 30 acres of land which is acquired on lease from HEC. The campus became punctual in September 2002. A permanent purpose build campus of CIIT Islamabad is in the process of construction at Chak Shahzad, where the department would be shifted.

CIIT Islamabad has about 3000 students and more than 500 faculty members in following department and faculties:-
