History and Buildings

(NOTE: WE SHARE THIS DOCUMENT WITH THOSE WHO PARTICIPATE IN BUILDING TOURS)
Welcome to 12Stone®!

I hope that your visit with us is productive and enjoyable.

Whenever pastors and leaders of other organizations come to visit, we have discovered that the same questions tend to get asked. “How many seats…?” “How many square feet?” “In what year did you….?” “How much did it cost?”

This information packet is designed to help provide you with the basic history and other information about our church. We have compiled a brief history of our journey, along with some key metrics and statistics.

Please let us know how this can be improved for the future. In the meantime, please contact me to schedule a visit, or if you have any other questions.

12Stone® Church

The Early Years

Over 25 years ago, a handful of young, idealistic people met and began to imagine a place. They shared a vision that church should be relevant, fun, and challenging. They dreamed of people living in authentically in their personal lives as well as with one another. They envisioned a place where God would be understood and honored as a simple matter of course of life. They longed for a place where God would not be a stranger to their kids.

Kevin Myers founded Crossroads Church (later to be renamed to 12Stone® Church) on November 1, 1987. Kevin and his wife Marcia, along with three other couples, relocated from Grand Rapids, Michigan to the Atlanta area for the purpose of planting this church. After meeting in exotic locations such as a movie theater, a dinner theater, and an exercise facility, 12Stone Church opened its doors to the new Collins Hill facility in November 1993.

A whole new world opened up as we grew from 175 to hundreds. It was during this season that 12Stone Church formed its vision “to reach as many people as possible for as long as God allows us to serve.” Lives were changed, people were baptized, and the adventure continued.

In 1995, we encountered an amazing turn of events. Doug Edwards, a gentleman who did not attend the church, found favor with our heart to reach the lost. He donated a major piece of property to the church - 13 acres on the corner of Calvin Davis Circle and Hwy 20. “Burn the Ships” (by Stephen Curtis Chapman) became our theme song as we raised the money to build what is now affectionately called the Edwards Center.

On August 22, 1999, the church family gathered as we declared our “Big Hairy Audacious Goal” (coined from Jim Collins book “Good to Great”) to become a church to reach ten’s of thousands locally, hundred’s of thousands nationally/internationally and millions more through the generations. We secured a loan and purchased an additional 69 acres along Highway 20.

In the spring of 2001, God moved upon the 12Stone Church family in a revival of prayer and launched us into a journey (now called “Imagine a Place” or IAP) to reach our community. Our sense of God’s call upon the church, which had been carried by a dedicated group of “insiders”, was now embraced by the entire church family. Together, we committed to give $6M to accomplish the following goals:

· Build a new 1,000 seat worship center (called “Edwards II”)

· Renovate the original building (called “Edwards I”) into a three story Children’s Ministry Center

· Pay off the $2.6M mortgage on the adjacent 70 acre property.

The first two goals were completed by April, 2003. In a major expansion of reach, we opened our doors to the new Edwards Center and over 4700 people attended our 4 Easter productions. In addition, we have expanded our offices into a new building on the Collins Hill campus AND we have renovated the original Collins Hill building into a very modern Student Center (with a game room, café, worship center, and 5 classrooms).
