Note: If you are seeking alternative teacher certification, the ESL Teaching Academy courses are NOT approved to meet Texas teacher certification requirements. This program offers instruction that can be used to prepare for The TExES Assessment, which is designed to ensure that Texas public school educators have the necessary knowledge and skills to perform their jobs.
Q: Is the ESL Teaching Academy right for me?
A: We serve students with a variety of educational goals. Our program may be just what you are looking for if you:
· have no prior teaching experience or training and want to become an ESL teacher,
· are an experienced ESL teacher seeking continuing professional development,
· want to learn methodology to teach ESL overseas, and
· are preparing for a second or retirement career.
Q: What are the prerequisites to enroll in the program?
A: No placement test is required. No previous ESL teaching experience is required. However, you do need to hold a high school diploma, GED or equivalent, and have advanced-level English language proficiency. Most participants in our program have college degrees, but others do not.
Q: What will I learn?
A: Taking ESL Teaching Academy courses will enhance your effectiveness as a teacher in the adult ESL classroom. You’ll get hands-on training delivered by experienced, practicing professionals in the field of ESL. Learn methods and techniques that really work — based on the latest research in the field — while enhancing your ESL presentation skills and knowledge.
Topics covered in the courses include:
· Second language acquisition
· Whole-language learning
· The four language skills: conversation, listening, reading and writing
· Lesson planning
· Classroom management
· Student assessment
· Teacher resources
Q: How much does the program cost?
A: Tuition for 13 courses in the complete program costs approximately $3,095.
Q: How is the ESL Teaching Academy structured?
A: You can take just the courses that interest you or complete all 13 courses. You can register and pay for one class at a time. You must be registered and paid before attending the class. To receive a completion certificate you must take all courses before the practicum. The practicum will include classroom observation, instructional delivery and observation of course participant in the practice of instruction.
Q: How long does it take to complete the program?
A: You can complete all requirements within a year and a half. The complete program is approximately 209 hours of instruction.
