A Teaching Progression for Offensive Linemen to Pass Block

In the West Coast Offenses

Philosophy:

1.Get your Offensive Linemen to use their Eyes in Pass Protection

2. Set to the Inside Eye of the Defender to give him A Two Way Go

I. Set to the Technique of the Defender

A. Head Up

B. Inside Shade

C. Outside Shade

II. The Big Dance

A. Feet – Power / Kick

B. Thumbs Up

C. Fat Neck

III. Movement Drills for the Different Set Points

A. Power

B. Kick

C. Add Eye Drills and Progression Drill to Train the Eyes

IV. Set and Punch Drills Note: Set to all 3 techniques

A. 1 Punch

B. 3 Punch

C. 3 Punch to Moves

V. Set Points- IE “ Give Up Ground Grudgingly”

A. Hand Fight

B. Push/Pulls

C. Add Moves to A and B

D. Point of No Return- Teaches Body in Space

Session 2:

Group and Scheme Work for Offensive linemen for Blitz Pick-Up

In a 2 back Set. (6 Man Protection)

Philosophy:

1.Get your Offensive Linemen to use their Eyes in Pass Protection

2. Set to the Inside Eye of the Defender to give him A Two Way Go

3. Identify and Protect Mike LB Blitz

I. Protection Rules

Tackles- On/Outside

Guards- On/Area/Mike

Center- On/Mike

RB- Will, Sam, Free Release

QB- if one of the RB has a Free Release, than the QB is responsible for that RB man- Will or Sam. IE-“Hot Read”

Note: Any uncovered Guard or Center will use call Blocking to Alert the Covered Linemen that he is going to Help him Block the to and through the DL to the Mike LB.

II. Define Terms

A. On – When the Defensive linemen’s “Big Toe” is in your space. He is On you, so you will ALWAYS BLOCK THE MAN ON YOU UNLESS CALLED OFF.

B. Area – When you are uncovered you will block the Area around you.

C. Stacked –Used to describe a LB which is over the Defensive Tackle.

D. Mike –The Mike LB will be the First Stacked LB to the Strength of the Formation.

III. Identification of the Mike LB in the Different Defensive Fronts.

IV. Group Work

A. Trio- Guards and Centers Block Through and To Mike

B. Sift- Tackle Block Inside most Threat

C. Combo
