Dear STEM Student:

The Black Engineers Society and the Minority Engineering Alumni of the University of Maryland wish to invite you to apply for the Michael L. Cherry Memorial Scholarship.

Michael L. Cherry, a 1984 Electrical Engineering graduate of the University of Maryland, was killed in an automobile accident on October 29, 1985. He is remembered for his persistence and hard work when he had to commute from his home in Baltimore to a full time job in College Park, all while pursuing his engineering degree as a full time student at the University of Maryland. These hardships never stopped him from showing a profound dedication to helping others along the way. Whether it was his love and passion for teaching and playing basketball, or the time he would take to tutor and inspire students in their studies of the game of both life and Engineering, Mike cared. When the Black Engineers Society needed someone to help, they knew they could always count on him.

This scholarship is our way of honoring Michael L. Cherry for the several contributions that he made throughout his life for his family, friends, associates and even strangers.

The scholarship award of at least $1,000.00 will be awarded to an individual who best exemplifies some of the qualities Michael manifested during his brief sojourn through the lives of those who remember him. If you would like to be considered for this scholarship, please complete and submit the enclosed application to the Center for Minorities in Science and Engineering, room 1131 Glenn L. Martin Hall at the front desk or to Kofi Addo room 1131LL by April 8, 2016.

Sincerely,

We are sure all of his friends can remember him in much more personal ways, but the scholarship is our way of saying thanks for the brief time we shared with him. When the recipient is chosen, we know Mike will be smiling again, because he’s helping somebody, only this time through our hearts, in remembrance of him.

The BLACK ENGINEERS SOCIETY

University of Maryland Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers

Since its inception in 1976, the Black Engineers Society (BES) has grown in to a successful organization dedicated to helping and improving the community. The primary focus of BES can be stated as the 3R’s – to recruit, retain, and release qualified minorities into the fields of computer science, engineering, mathematics and physical sciences. This goal is accomplished through numerous programs, services, and activities that help to academically and professionally develop minority science and engineering students.

Professional development is an important aspect of BES. We sponsor career workshops and invite speakers from professional companies to discuss employment opportunities and new developments within the technological field. General body meetings give corporate representatives the opportunity to educate students concerning the cultural and ethical issues in today’s business and industry.

BES offers academic assistance in the form of advising, tutoring, study groups, and exam files. In addition, workshops discuss study skills and time management techniques, as well as methods for coping with stress. These programs help “retain” and “release” our members.

The Pre-College Initiative (PCI) is the BES program that focuses on recruiting future science and engineering students. Its purpose is to help improve mathematics, scientific, verbal, and written skills of high school, junior high, and elementary school students, as well as stimulate interest in science and engineering. The PCI program provides mentoring and tutoring, organizes campus field trips, and assists in establishing NSBE Junior Chapters at local high schools. Each spring, middle and high school students are invited to participate in the annual Higher Education Awareness Day PCI Conference (Shadow Day).

BES will continue to provide services to promote and encourage minority participation in the field of engineering. This in turn strengthens our community and maintains a strong foundation that can be passed from one generation to the next.
