Board of Education Meeting

October 13, 2015

The regular meeting of the Board of Education of Community Unit School District No. 1 was called to order by President, Dave Clapp at 7:00 p.m. in the Ellen R. Morris Board Room. The following members were in attendance:

Audience members present were: Brent Rademacher, Phil Benjamin, Laura Girton, Rusty Campbell, Peggy Hill, Tim DePuy and Sarah DePuy.

Motion by Blake Swinford, second by Tricia Hagley to approve the agenda of the October 13 board meeting. Motion carried by unanimous voice vote.

Motion was made by Steve Lane, second by Cheryl Brumett to approve the minutes of the September 14 board meeting and budget hearing. Motion carried by unanimous voice vote.

Motion by Tricia Hagley, second by Steve Lane to approve the bills of the month. Motion carried by unanimous roll call vote.

Activity fund balances were approved.

Motion by Tricia Hagley, second by Cheryl Brumett to approve DARE agreement for the 2015-2016 school year. Motion carried by unanimous roll call vote.

Motion by Ron Winkler, second by Tricia Hagley to go into closed session at 7:04 p.m. to discuss student discipline. Motion carried by unanimous voice vote.

Motion by Cheryl Brumett, second by Ron Winkler to go back into open session at 7:30p.m. and to approve the closed session minutes . Motion carried by unanimous voice vote.

Motion by Ron Winkler, second by Steve Lane to expel Student A this semester and next semester. Student A can enroll in school at Bismarck-Henning in August of 2016. Motion carried by unanimous roll call vote.

Brent Rademacher, HS principal, would like to thank the student council led by Sheryl Ribbe for the help with the parade and the alumni at Homecoming. Regional soccer tournament is Friday. HS volleyball is top seed in county. The golf team are conference champions. 3rd in sectional and state team qualifier. We had 31% more students meet or exceed on the English/Math ACT tests. The band received “Best Percussion” award and 2nd place overall missing 1st by .3 of a point. Chorus has 35 students. The Christmas concert is December 16 at 6:30 p.m. We had 30 donations for the blood drive. HS student, Cameron Merrill is working with Thyssen Krupp.

The results of the FY 2015 Audit was presented with a net operating expense of $6,191,635 compared to FY 2014 Audit with a net operating expense of $6,382,207. It was a clean audit. Motion by Tricia Hagley, second by Cheryl Brumett to approve results of FY 2015 audit. Motion carried by unanimous voice vote.

The FY 2016 levy information was presented. The state is discussing a property tax freeze.

Motion by Steve Lane, second by Tricia Hagley to approve closing class of 2014 and 2015 activity accounts and to transfer balance of $811.39 into the school beautification activity account. Motion carried by unanimous voice vote.

Motion by Ron Winkler, second by Cheryl Brumett to allow the Men’s Club to have an Easter Egg Hunt at the school on April 4, 2016 at 10 a.m. and the annual fireworks display on June 18, 2016 at the school. Motion carried by unanimous voice vote.

VASE/College Express reports were given.

Our sympathy is extended to Jean Carter on the death of her husband, Chuck Carter, retired custodian.

HS graduation is tentatively set for Sunday, May 15, 2016 at 1:30 p.m.

Motion by Blake Swinford, second by Cheryl Brumett to approve retirement of Susan Kentner as junior high physical education teacher and junior high volleyball coach at the end of the 2015-2016 school year. Motion carried by unanimous voice vote.

Motion by Tricia Hagley, second by Steve Lane to approve Lacie Krabel as junior high cheerleading sponsor for the 2015-2016 school year. Motion carried by unanimous roll call vote.

Motion by Steve Lane, second by Tricia Hagley to give approval to Jeni Cole and Nicole McFarland as volunteer junior high assistant volleyball coaches for the 2015-2016 school year. Motion carried by unanimous voice vote.

Motion by Ron Winkler, second by Steve Lane to give approval for the employment of Kathy Mathis as high school acting director the 2016 spring musical. Motion carried by unanimous roll call vote.

Motion by Cheryl Brumett, second by Tricia Hagley to give approval for the employment of Jeff Beukelman as high school musical director/musical producer/musical sets for the 2016 spring musical. Motion carried by unanimous roll call vote.

Motion by Steve Lane, second by Cheryl Brumett to employ Andrew Hunt as part time custodian for the 2015-2016 school year. Motion carried by unanimous roll call vote.

Parents are appreciative of junior high principal, Rusty Campbell, greeting students outside in the morning.
