ASTROLOGY IN GRENDEL
Directions: Each chapter in Grendel corresponds to one of the signs of the zodiac, beginning with chapter one, the ram. In each chapter, find the reference to the sign. Copy the sentence and page number for each. Comment on how the aspects of each sign are present in the chapter.
Chapter 1 Aries the Ram
“The old ram stands looking down over rockslides, stupidly triumphant.” (p. 5)
In this chapter, Gardner presents a Grendel who has grown tired of the world and acts in an impulsive manner toward it (eating men for no reason, yelling at animals and the sky). The fire that corresponds to this sign can be seen echoed in the funeral fires that are made for tribute to the monster’s victims (p. 14).
