Dr. Alex J. DeCaria is an Associate Professor of Earth Sciences (Meteorology) at Millersville University in Pennsylvania. Prior to his career in higher education, he spent 11 years in the U.S. Navy as a surface warfare officer and as a meteorology and oceanography officer, leaving with the rank of lieutenant commander. In addition to teaching core meteorology courses at Millersville University, Dr. DeCaria also teaches courses in computer programming and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Dr. DeCaria holds a B.S. in meteorology from the University of Utah, an M.S. in meteorology and physical oceanography from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, and a Ph.D. in meteorology from the University of Maryland.

Dr. DeCaria is developing an online GIS course for Millersville’s master’s degree program in emergency management, and this is his motivation for attending the conference. He hopes to gain an understanding of the GIS needs of emergency managers and also an understanding of the HAZUS program so that he can incorporate these into his course.
