JOB DESCRIPTION: Assistant Ecologist (Circa £14000 pro rata)

KEY COMMITTEE: LCA Board

PURPOSE OF POST: To be responsible for assisting the Consultant Ecologists with the undertaking habitat and protected species surveys and subsequent production of reports. Carrying out of general office administration and other duties as stipulated by the Consultancy Manager.

KEY TASKS:

·  Carrying out ecological surveys and assessments to a high standard in conjunction with Consultant Ecologists.

·  Preparing ecological reports and documents as required under supervision of a Consultant Ecologist or the Consultancy Manager.

·  Assisting with the production of quotes and the updating of the quote database.

·  Maintenance of all survey equipment and apparatus, arranging the purchase of new equipment as necessary.

·  Helping to promote and developing the consultancy’s role in conserving biodiversity.

OTHER ITEMS:

·  This post is 37.5 hours per week (though part time will be considered) from Mid May to Mid September 2013.

·  The nature of this post means that out of hours and weekend work will be required.

·  The post holder will abide by LCA’s equal opportunities policy.

LOCATION:

·  This post is to be based at the LCA office in Birmingham, although a degree of home working will occasionally be considered.

·  The post holder may be required to work at other sites or elsewhere as the need arises and access to own transport will be necessary.


PERSONNEL SPECIFICATION: Assistant Ecologist

EXPERIENCE

·  Ecological survey techniques.

·  Working with protected species (preferably holding or working towards licences).

·  Computer databases, Microsoft Office.

·  Report writing and presentation skills.

This post will not suit someone without a good record of experience in the above areas. They are likely to have had graduate/post graduate training in a relevant discipline with some work experience and be eligible for membership of a professional body such as CIEEM.

KNOWLEDGE

·  A broad knowledge of UK biodiversity.

·  Ecological and conservation principles.

·  Environmental assessment

·  Urban wildlife.

·  Wildlife legislation.

SKILLS

·  Carry out tasks on their own and with others.

·  Deal promptly and efficiently with enquiries from the clients.

·  Keep records of work and report on progress.

·  Produce professional reports and maps

PERSONAL QUALITIES

·  Be highly organised

·  Maintain high levels of enthusiasm and self-motivation.
