Dr. Ronald Lott, of Orono, who was presented with the Veterinary Service Award by the Maine Veterinary Medical Association. The award recognizes his tireless efforts, through the establishment of shelters, to care for unwanted animals. Dr. Lott began his work with stray animals as an intern at Rowley Memorial Animal Hospital. In 1981, he established the Penobscot Valley Humane Society in Lincoln. Ten years later he founded the Animal Orphanage in Old Town. He also owns and operates Timberland Animal Hospital in Orono. Dr. Lott continues to donate his time to care for animals at the Animal Orphanage. We send our appreciation to Dr. Lott for his kindness to animals and extend our congratulations and best wishes to him on this occasion; (HLS 1)

Rita Wotton, of Littleton, on the occasion of her 95th birthday, December 25, 2002. Mrs. Wotton is the oldest citizen of Littleton and holds the Boston Cane. She has been active in her community and is known as the "community cook." We extend our congratulations to her on this very special occasion; (HLS 2)

Walter Litchfield, of Sumner, on the occasion of his retirement after 10 years as Fire Chief of the Sumner Volunteer Fire Department. Chief Litchfield, known to family and friends as Wally, was a founding member of the department and has served the department faithfully for 4 decades. During his tenure, the department has nearly doubled in terms of both equipment and trained membership. We join the citizens of his community in sending to him our appreciation for his dedicated service and commitment to the Sumner Volunteer Fire Department; (HLS 4)

Christopher Hughes, of Oxford, a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 196, who has attained the high rank and distinction of Eagle Scout. We extend our congratulations to Christopher on this accomplishment; (HLS 5)

Michael Wilhelm, Superintendent of School Administrative District 75, who has been named Superintendent of the Year by the Maine School Superintendents Association. We extend our congratulations to Mr. Wilhelm on this accomplishment; (HLS 6)

Lorraine Stickney, of Gorham, who is being honored by having the Gorham High School Library named after her. She is receiving this honor for her many years of community service to the town and for her service to Gorham High School as the school librarian. Dean Evans, of Gorham, who is being honored by having the Gorham High School Gymnasium named after him. He is receiving this honor for his many years of community service to the town and for his service to Gorham High School as a teacher and coach. Bev Wrigley, of Oakland, for her participation in the Head Start holiday festivities for 36 years, and for all she does to help her community. Bev has worked for the Bureau of Information Services for the past 12 years. She is retiring in August after working for 46 years for the State of Maine. We acknowledge her valuable and dedicated service to the people of the State of Maine, and we extend our congratulations and best wishes to her; (HLS 13)

` Pilots Grill. The restaurant will close at the end of December 2002 after 62 years as a Bangor institution. The restaurant, a family business run by the Zoidis family, has served as the stage for many of the State's most historic events, from end-of-war celebrations to political victory parties. Pilots Grill has been at its current location for almost 50 years, moving from its original site near the runway of the then Bangor Airfield in 1956. Current owner Bill Zoidis took over the restaurant from his father and his two uncles and was a partner with Andy Gass for almost 30 years. We extend our appreciation to the Zoidis family for providing a place of fine dining to the citizens of the State for so many years; (HLS 14)

Sidney Branson, of Windham, a family doctor in Windham for 45 years. Dr. Branson came to Windham and began his practice in 1940. He served in the United States Army during World War II as captain in the Army Medical Corps, with a 2 1/2-year tour of duty in the Pacific Theater, from New Caledonia to Okinawa. He was a member of numerous fraternal and professional organizations and was president of the Maine Academy of Family Practice and the Portland Medical Club. He was on the attending staff of Maine Medical Center, Mercy Hospital and Westbrook Hospital. Dr. Branson was instrumental in starting the Department of Family Practice at Maine Medical Center in 1957, which was responsible for training residents in family practice. He was county medical examiner for 25 years, physician for Maine Correctional Center, college physician for St. Joseph's College, health officer and school physician for the town of Windham and member of the Windham School Board for 2 terms. Dr. Branson was editor and publisher of the Pine Tree G.P., a medical magazine for family physicians. He will be greatly missed by his loving family, colleagues and many friends; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 15)

Alice Keene, of Oxford, on the milestone celebration of her 80th Birthday, December 16, 2002, and in extending our congratulations and best wishes to her on this occasion; (HLS 16)

the Foxcroft Academy Ponies Football Team, upon its winning the Eastern Maine Class C Football Championship and on its undefeated record (11-0) during the regular season of play. The team demonstrated exceptional effort and sportsmanship, which are a tribute to the academy. We send our congratulations and best wishes to the members and coaches of the team on their achieving this distinctive honor; (HLS 17)

Theodore R. Tracy, of Hebron, on the occasion of his retirement after 15 years as the Register of Probate for Oxford County. We extend our appreciation to Mr. Tracy for his dedication to the citizens of the State and wish him the best in his future endeavors; (HLS 18)

Carol Millett, of Norway, who has been named Employee of the Year for 2002 by the Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Millett is a 30-year employee of the Town of Norway, starting as clerk and advancing to her current position as administrative assistant to the town manager. She is well-known for her reliability and her expertise involving town affairs. We send to her our congratulations and best wishes on this occasion; (HLS 19)

Joseph Cooney, of Norway, who has received the annual Community Service award from the Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce in recognition of his unselfish and tireless efforts to support veterans and their families. Mr. Cooney is the current chair and a founding member of the Western Maine Veterans Advisory Committee. We send to him our congratulations and best wishes on this occasion; (HLS 20)

Lorraine Demers, of Lewiston, on the occasion of her retirement from John F. Murphy Homes, Inc., a residential care facility for people with disabilities, after 14 years of dedicated service. We send our congratulations and best wishes to Ms. Demers for a long and happy retirement; (HLS 21)

Bill Jack, of Bowdoin, a member of Boy Scout Troop #639, who has attained the high rank and distinction of Eagle Scout. We send our congratulations to Bill on this accomplishment; (HLS 22)

William Matthews, of Gray, a member of Boy Scout Troop #86, who has attained the high rank and distinction of Eagle Scout. We commend William for his many hours of dedicated service to his community and send to him our congratulations on this accomplishment; (HLS 23)

Ann Milliken Hamlin, of East Millinocket, beloved wife of Dr. Irvin E. Hamlin, an active participant in civic organizations and a member of the Maine Harness Horseman's Association. Mrs. Hamlin was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, a trustee of MCI and served on the boards of Community Health and Counseling Services, Oak Park Manor and Katahdin Friends. She enjoyed playing pitch and bridge with her friends and had an unending passion for horses. She will be greatly missed by her loving family and many friends; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 24)

the Franklin County Children's Task Force on its 25th Anniversary. The task force performs important work for and is dedicated to the children of Franklin County. We extend our congratulations and best wishes to the task force; (HLS 25)

Carl Frye, of Portland, a student at Portland High School, who was named as the 2002 Gatorade Player of the Year, for his athletic achievement. We extend our best wishes and congratulations to him on his accomplishments; (HLS 26)

Jason Pettry, of Wells, a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 356, who has attained the high rank and distinction of Eagle Scout. We extend our congratulations to Jason on this accomplishment; (HLS 27)

Ronell F. Harris, of Cape Elizabeth, beloved husband of Betty Lou Harris, a recipient of the Governor's Award for Alcohol and Drug Prevention and Education and named Oilman of the Year by the Maine Petroleum Association. Mr. Harris was part of the 3rd generation to run Harris Oil Company. He helped to guide the company successfully through the oil embargo of the 1970s, during which he was an advisor to President Carter. While at Harris Oil Company, he held many industry positions, including membership on the Board of Directors of the Maine Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Board of the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Portland. Mr. Harris was a member of the South Portland Lions Club and had a lifetime Membership at the Greater Portland YMCA. His work at the YMCA included serving on its board as treasurer and director. He also served on the South Portland Board of Education and supported sports programs for youth, including the Sunset Park Girls Softball League and the Tradesmen's Hockey Team. Mr. Harris enjoyed spending time with his family and especially enjoyed his stays at the family summer home on Round Pond Harbor. He and his beloved wife were instrumental in the restoration of the Little Brown Church, getting it listed on the National Historic Register in 1998. Mr. Harris will be greatly missed by his loving family, many friends and those he met while serving his community; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 28)

Bryan and Breen Bell, of Bell Brothers in Mars Hill, who have been named McCain Foods Champion Potato Growers for Aroostook County for the 5th time. The brothers are the 26th recipients of the revolving Champion Potato Grower trophy. Bell Brothers received this honor for the outstanding characteristics of their potatoes, which include the size, defect level, color and delivery date for each load of potatoes delivered to McCain's Easton french-fry plant.
