Let's Read Math™ ROOM 1

Kaitlin Gonzales & Amanda Glassman will show you how to read an exciting children's book with a math theme followed by a fun activity related to the literature. Be sure to visit room 1 and share in the fun!

Pre K Reading Time

Parents and pre-K students are invited to listen to their teachers read

Dr. Seuss stories and they may participate in an art activity following the story.

There will be two 45 minute sessions in room 38 and the activity will follow. Please feel free to come to any, or all, of the sessions.

6:00-6:45 Miss Azzaro and Mrs. Kenehan will be reading The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss and making “Cat in the Hat” hats with Miss Ortiz.

6:45-7:30 Miss Spagnuolo and Miss Lenarski will be reading, Dr. Seuss’s ABC’s by Dr. Seuss and using ABC stampers to stamp names with Miss Ortiz.

Kindergarten “Reading is a Dream."

Kindergarten students and their parents are invited to hear bedtime stories in their pajamas. Additionally, students have been working hard to improve their writing. Stop by the Kindergarten hallway to see how they have grown as writers!

Grade One Living Museum-Biographies/GYMNASIUM

The First Grade began a unit on non-fiction text in January. Classes learned about

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on his birthday and Abraham Lincoln and George Washington in February. In addition, students learned to read non-fiction information in order to complete an individual biography study on a person of their choice. Students' biography projects will be on display at the Living Museum in the gymnasium as a celebration of their hard work! Students will dress as their person as a fun way to conclude their study!

Grade Two My Favorite Book

All students in second grade made book covers of a favorite book they've read. Additionally, you will find authentic writing displayed in the hallway. You may find examples of personal narratives, small moments, fantasy stories, How To’s, informational writings, math word problems and more. Come check us out in the second grade hallway!

Additionally, second grade is raising money this year for the "Save the Terrapin Turtle" and “Save the Horseshoe Crab" project in conjunction with the Wetlands Institute of Stone Harbor, New Jersey. With the money raised this year, we will donate a portion of the fundraising to help save the Terrapin Turtles and the Horseshoe Crab. Additionally, second grade plans to bring in an assembly for our students! Please donate J

Grade Three Realistic Fiction and Personal Narratives

Third grade is working hard on their writer's craft in both realistic fiction and personal narratives. For our realistic fiction stories we created vivid characters, with internal and external traits, who embarked on an adventure. With our new personal narrative stories, we focused on "me" being the main character and zooming in on a great moment. We planned and organized our story and added details to really bring the moment to life. Then we revised and edited before proudly publishing and displaying them in the third grade hall.

Additionally, third grade will have two rooms available tonight for you to visit!

Room 2: Fun literacy games that revolve around: chunking words using

magnets, mad libs, and phonics.

Room 3 Engage in a Smartboard activity using the Scholastic Spin-A-Story Program!

Grade Four “First Try” Realistic Narratives

After spending several months working on personal narratives, the fourth graders have been working diligently to create "first try" realistic fiction narratives. They have focused on using effective story beginnings and endings, dialogue with correct punctuation, varied synonyms, appropriate paragraphing, effective “show, don’t tell” descriptions, and figurative language. Using mentor texts to differentiate between the two, students were able to choose between writing these narratives from the 1st or 3rd person perspective.

Grade Five Fiction Writing &

Celebration of Black History Month

As part of our Civil Rights Unit and celebration of Black History Month, fifth graders worked on a "Civil Rights Social Media" project. Students have created mock paper Facebook pages for MLK or other civil rights leaders. The pages are displayed in the upstairs hallway along with our fictional writing.
