A PHS “Quarterly” (2ND Edition!!!)

Introduction

Cralen graciously drafted and “published” the 1st edition of the PHS Quarterly at the end of March 2009. I volunteered to do the next “Quarterly” edition and I’ve already made his title of “Quarterly” a bit overstated. I apologize to all for nearly making this a “Semi-Annual Report”.

Everyone, past and present PHS, knows Cralen and calls him friend. I am likely not as familiar to many of you. My name is Allison Florance and I worked with the motley crew of PHS from Sept 1997 thru Oct 2000. It seems nearly impossible to me that it was 9 years ago that I left WFU. My time there remains some of my fondest employment memories as we were as much a family as coworkers. I now live in Raleigh and have worked at GSK for 8 years as a statistician in the clinical trials arena of first HIV and now oncology. I’ve been married to Wade for 20 years (our anniversary just passed in July). We both love the Raleigh area. We have no children, but for those of you who know us at all know that we value the companionship of our canine companions. We sadly lost our standard poodle, Boris (who made the photo below with Scott), very suddenly in May, but have since added a new member of the family, Dudley-Do-Right (yes, we are Rocky and Bullwinkle fans). I’m looking forward to a trip down memory lane in 2 weeks as I’m heading back to Alaska for vacation where I spent much of my childhood. Wade and I hosted the last PHS reunion in Raleigh in Sept 2005 (again could it really be that long ago)? This smoothly transitions us to the next feature of this “Quarterly”:

What? PHS REUNION

When? 25 OCT 2009

Where? JUDY BAHNSON’S HOME

Fun was had by all at the last one in Sept 2005…Don’t miss out !

OTHER NEWS, ANNOUNCEMENTS, & ACHIEVEMENTS

Scott Rushing reports that Lindsay is turning 11 years old

These kids grow like weeds!

Margie Troxler updates us: “Absolutely nothing of interest has occurred in my life since the last publication of the newsletter! Let’s hope the others actually have a life”

It looks like the Reboussins have a life! Beth writes “Here picture from our 3 week/5000 mile road trip out west this summer. We went to Badlands National Park, Mt. Rushmore, Yellowstone National Park, Grand Tetons National Park, Dinosaur National Monument and Rocky Mountain National Park. This pick is from Jackson Hole, Wyoming.”

Dan Zaccaro updates:

· Warren (age 17) is now taking driver's education (in other news, Dan has had strange bouts of insomnia)

· The four of us (Dan, Elin, Warren, Kevin) went on a Caribbean cruise this spring where Dan and Elin won "The Newlywed Game" (although married for 25 years)

· Dan climbed Mt Washington (New Hampshire) with three of his brothers this summer

· Dan enjoys work at Rho and it continues to keep him busy, but he misses the folks at WFUSM very much

For those too modest to recognize their own achievements

See if you can guess the Alumni member based on these clues (answers at the bottom):

· I worked hard and played hard with the PHS group. Social activities and softball were a favorite of mine. I was usually the last one done eating at seminar and the first one to try to avoid Greg Russell as he roamed the halls with a new consulting project. I am known for merging onto highways while pizza is flying off my roof onto to an unsuspecting car behind me. WHO AM I?

· Before coming to PHS I worked at an organization endorsed by the Village People. Although I am a Carolina grad and fan, I am not a snooty person but I do look down on most people when I am standing. I would bet that my last name is known by most if not all in PHS. WHO AM I?

· The Florance Family and Reboussin Family have both welcomed new canine members into their family. One is named Dudley-Do-Right (aka Dude) and one another named Rodeo Bucking Bison (aka Rodey). Yes, they are REAL pictures of both. NO, we didn’t call each other that morning to make sure we would “match”. WHICH AM I ??

It was a lot of fun putting the newsletter together (once I actually sat down to do it) and hearing from some of you directly. We hope to have people take turns putting this update out. This way everyone gets to know a different person a bit more in the introduction section and each newsletter has a slightly different feel. Ideally this would involve current and past PHSers. WE ARE SEEKING VOLUNTEERS!! Please let Cralen and Allison know if you are interested in the being editor in chief of the next “Quarterly” newsletter or one in the future.

Answers to Who Am I? Peggy James, Laurie Russell and Rodey then Dude
