Your November Checklist
ü Most college applications should be submitted before Thanksgiving break. Remember, I need at least a week to process your transcripts and other requirements. The process takes time. Procrastinators beware!
ü All college applications should be submitted before Christmas break.
ü Remember to give your recommendation writers all the information they need and at least two weeks to write them. Please remember to write a thank you to those who are writing recommendations. It’s a process that takes time. Again, procrastinators beware!
ü Remember to apply online to the NCAA Clearinghouse if there is the slightest possibility you will play Division I or II sports. Apply at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net.
ü If you have questions, please make an appointment to see me.
ü Watch for information on senior designated bulletin boards, read the monthly newsletters, and listen to announcements.
Selective Service System
If you are a male student and are 17 or 18 years old, remember you must register with Selective Service within 30 days of turning 18. This is not a school requirement; it's the law. If you fail to register, it will affect your ability to receive Federal College loans, grants and student aid in most states. You can go online at www.sss.gov or fill out a registration card at any U.S. Post Office.
Financial Aid Night
Our SWAHS Financial Aid Night is Thursday, January 15th at 6:30 p.m., featuring Dennis Correll, Associate Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at Penn College.

To attend college visits, you must get a hall pass from Mrs. Geise, the guidance secretary, before 2:45 the day before each visit. You will not be permitted to attend a college visit without a pass.

Request a FAFSA PIN
Visit http://www.pin.ed.gov to obtain your PIN (Personal Identification Number), your personal electronic access code number. You can’t file your FAFSA until after January 1, but it’s advisable to get your PIN now.
SAT Scores
If you need updated SAT scores sent to your schools, come in so we can print them out. Penn State, Penn College and others require SAT Scores sent directly from Collegeboard.org.

November 4—Jack Kent Cooke Foundation College Scholarship This is for a senior with an unweighted GPA 90% or higher, SAT scores of 1200 or higher based on reading and math or ACT 26 or higher, and demonstrate financial need. November 12 – Women in Transportation Scholarship For women considering a career as an engineer, scientist, geologist, finance, architect, ecologist, computer/IT, etc. there are scholarships worth $1,000-10,000. Go to www.wtsinternational.org/centralpennsylvania/scholarships/
December 15—AXA Achievement Scholarships These $10,000 scholarships are given to students who set and reach ambitious goals, demonstrate drive, determination and ability to succeed in college and who have respect for self, family, and community. December 5—Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarship State and national awards of up to $15,000, some renewable each year. Start the application early--you need an essay and the counselor must fill out a form. www.elks.org/enf/scholars .
December 18—NFIB Young Entrepreneur Award Are you a young entrepreneur? Graduating seniors who operate their own small business are eligible to receive $1000-$10,000. http://www.nfib.com/YEA

January 5—Profile in Courage Essay Contest Write a 1000 word essay on political courage and win up to $10,000. See www.jfklibrary.org for information.
January 9—PA JCI Senate Scholarship Program Each year two $500 grants will be awarded to graduating PA high school seniors, who plan to continue their education at an accredited post-secondary schools. January 15—National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) Scholarships These awards are between $1000 - $3000 for highly qualified high school seniors who have been diagnosed with MS or who have a parent living with MS. For more information, visit www.nationalMSsociety.org/scholarships
