This past weekend I went to a place called Smith Sanctuary out on High Island to take pictures of birds. I love nature… birds and other animals, flowers and trees, rivers and lakes… they all fascinate me! At the sanctuary I got to watch Great Herons and Roseated Spoonbills nesting! I got to watch as they gathered sticks to build their nests. Often times they would fly right over my head! It was like having a front row seat of a nature documentary! I know not everyone appreciates things like this… does it sound like something that would interest you? Are you a nature lover or is it one of those things that you just don’t understand why other people get so excited about it?

Does anyone in your family own a digital camera? I ask because I realize this is another technology that is decreasing in popularity due to cell phones. Let’s face it… all the cell phones have digital cameras in them and most of them are pretty good! The thing about cell phone cameras though, is that they do not come with all the different settings. So, does your family have a digital camera? If you had to predict, where do you see the digital camera market in 20 years?

My Animation classes are starting their cereal project today. That got me to thinking about when I was a kid, going to the grocery store… picking out cereal…it was all about the prize in the box! Which cereal had the coolest prize actually INSIDE the box! It was my sister and I who picked out the cereal. She is 2 years older than me and I didn’t always like what she chose. On rare occasions we got to get TWO boxes of cereal! So here is today’s question… who picks out the breakfast cereal in your family? And… what is your favorite cereal?

A while back we talked about distracted driving… in New York there is a law that has been introduced to allow police officers to access a driver’s phone immediately after an accident to see if they had been using the phone in the minutes leading up to the accident. Supposedly, the software they would be using on the phone would not reveal the contents of of texts, just that there had been texts sent and at what time. Would you support such a law here in texas? Do you see any implications to other areas of our lives if a law like this were passed?

Week 14

This weekend I went with friends to the beach. One of the things we did was light painting. My friend took her camera and tripod and we went to the beach at night. She set up her camera and we took pictures of us running around with glow sticks and other light sources. She used a really slow shutter setting to capture the light. Check out the link below to read more about about light painting, and then google the images of light painting. Would you be willing to try something like this? I will admit, my friend had trouble getting her “subjects” to cooperate. We were all cold and just wanted to go back into the beach house!

In this digital age, most of us (at least in my generation) agree that there is an issue with people (not just teenagers) being addicted to their digital devices. Not just their cell phones, but gaming systems and the internet in general. There are all kinds of problems that come along with this “addiction”. Watch the trailer at the link below and then answer this question: Do you think young people in particular are addicted to their screens? Do you think your screens cause you to do less than your best? Do you think there is a problem that needs to be addressed?

One of the things I love to do at the beach is hunt for sand crabs at night, especially if you have kids to hunt with. Sand crabs are about the color of sand and they move really fast. They come out during the day, but more at night when they don’t have to worry as much about predators. To hunt at night, you use a flashlight. If I don’t have kids with me, I just spot them with the flashlight and then see how long I can keep them in the light. If I have kids, I try to get the kids to try to catch them. The kids almost always end up squealing because the crabs will change directions and end up heading straight towards the kids! It’s hilarious! Have you ever had the chance to hunt for sand crabs? Do you have a younger sibling that you could convince to do this? I promise you will laugh so hard!

My mother used to have a saying “Can’t never could”. For years I did not understand this saying… but what it means is this: If you think you can’t do something you are right. For if you have already made up your mind that you can’t, you will not put forth the effort needed to do it… even if it was something that would have turned out to be easier than you thought, if you think you can’t, you most likely won’t try at all or at best will give it only half-hearted effort, which will not be enough to get it done. Same holds true for something that you think is stupid or worthless… if you have already made up your mind that something is stupid or worthless, it is highly unlikely that you will ever see its value. Stop and think a moment… how does this saying hold true to your academic life? Have you ever had something (an assignment or maybe even a whole class) that you either thought you could not pass or that you thought was worthless? Do you think your pre-conceived notions sabotage your performance? Just remember this… the harder the task is for you to perform, the prouder you should be when you accomplish it. Where is the pride in completing a task that is easy? That’s like giving a trophy or award just because you participated…
