Advanced Fused & Slumped Glass

This class offers the advanced student a chance to practice and hone fusing and slumping skills, as well as learn cold working techniques. Participants will create at least two pieces of their own art glass; learn a variety of techniques, and learn about developing kiln programs for firing glass. In creating work, the emphasis will be on developing pieces to a higher level of complexity and honing previously learned skills. The class will cover a range of topics pertaining to fusing glass, including tools, health concerns, safety concerns, materials, and information about working with glass, including tips for how to make it successful for anyone taking the class. Discussion will be held about the particulars of teaching fused glass in the public school classroom.

At the end of the class you’ll have:

· At least two pieces of glass you created (maximum five pieces)

· Experience in cold working

· An understanding of glass firing, and the slumping process

· Information about building a glass program, or modifying your knowledge for use in your own school

The class will be taught by Marianne Vinich, one of the art teachers at Riverton High School. She’s been teaching fused and stained glass for more than 20 years.

Date: August 1 -5, 2014 (start at 5pm on August 1; end early on August 5)

Place: Riverton High School, Riverton WY

Credit: 3 UW Outreach Credits or PTSB credits will be awarded. Outreach credit (also known as graduate) costs $50/credit and is payable at registration

Lodging: If you select a lodging option, you do not need to register at the hotel. This will be done for you. See below for more information on lodging.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are on your own. There will be breaks during the schedule, but please plan to bring your own food or head out for a quick bite to each. Also plan to bring a reusable, non-breakable water container.

Cost: $550 for the class (lodging extra, see registration form)

Class fee will include all materials. Participants have the option to include lodging in their fee at either double or single rates (see registration form). Requests for roommates will be honored to the extent possible. Participants requesting doubles must be prepared to pay the single cost in the event that no one is available to share. You will be notified prior if this happens.

While this fee may seem high, please know that glass is extremely expensive and that we purchase a large amount of unusual glasses because we realize art teachers have a highly developed aesthetic sense and will appreciate the options of a wider range of glass. This fee is comparable, or low, compared to other classes on fused glass that may be offered, when you consider the number and size of pieces, and quality of materials.

The fee for the class is NON-REFUNDABLE and must be paid in advance. Lodging costs will be refundable, depending on how early the cancellation is made.
