ADOLESCENT FAMILY LIFE PROGRAM (AFLP)
The purpose of this release is to inform CSW staff about the Adolescent Family Life Program (AFLP). In California, pregnant and parenting teens, including expectant and parenting fathers, regardless of income, may participate in this statewide program. Case managers from AFLP provide services to help ensure the birth of a healthy baby, assist teens to complete their education and have a successful entry into the job market, prevent additional unintended pregnancies, and promote healthy family life. In addition, AFLP programs may offer education on AIDS prevention, dropout prevention, violence prevention, special programs for teen fathers, and family life education. Case managers from AFLP strive to help the pregnant and parenting teen understand the responsibilities of parenthood. They also provide guidance and support as the teen learns how to utilize available resources and advocates for his or her rights as a pregnant or parenting teen.
Individuals eligible for AFLP must be pregnant and/or parenting. Entry into the program for the female client must occur prior to age 18. Entry for the male client must occur prior to age 21. Services are provided up to age 20 for females and up to age 21 for males. Clients involved in the AFLP program are not charged a fee for services.
CSWs are encouraged to identify and promptly refer any pregnant or parenting teen on their caseloads to the AFLP programs in the client’s geographical area.
