2013
Candidate 1, Department of Anatomy, Test College of Medicine, has been selected to receive the 2013 AAA Keith and Marion Moore Young Anatomist’s Publication Award (YAPA) for her submission entitled, “Test title” (citation of article).
This research article provides the first detailed report of the cranial muscle development in axolotl from early ontogenetic stages to the adult stage. This article provides detailed information and excellent figures that document muscle development in the head from anterior to posterior, from medial to lateral and from origin to insertion of the axolotl. This study also provides an updated comparison between the muscles of the axolotl to the muscles of other vertebrates.
The Committee based its decision on the judging criteria. The article is distinguished for its clarity of writing, including the outstanding presentation of the initial questions and summation and discussion of results. This paper provides a thorough literature review and rationale for conducting this research due to the current gap in the knowledge about the homology of cranial muscle development in amphibians. The importance of the study is this work will allow future researchers to address crucial questions regarding the origin, homology and evolution of the muscles of the amphibian, the evolutionary history of the tetrapods as a whole and, importantly, the origin of the ground-plan of reptiles and mammals.
