A RESOLUTION memorializing Dr. Thomas D. Myers.
WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas D. Myers was a longtime resident of Richmond, Kentucky; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas D. Myers dedicated his career to educating the students at Eastern Kentucky University; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas D. Myers first came to Eastern Kentucky University in 1964 as the Chairperson for Health Education and was later given the task for developing the first College of Allied Health; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas D. Myers became the Vice President of Student Affairs and the Dean of Students in 1969 and maintained the responsibilities of both positions until 2000; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas D. Myers never lost the love of teaching, and was able to return to that role as tenured full professor for two years after his term of service as Vice President of Student Affairs and the Dean of Students; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas D. Myers, in his time at Eastern Kentucky University, created or expanded the student service areas of health, counseling, minority affairs, and disability issues; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas D. Myers served his community as president of the United Way of Madison County, president of the Bluegrass Council of Boy Scouts, and as an active member of the Episcopal Church, and served his country through many avenues abroad; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas D. Myers was a recipient of the Royal Order of Scotland, and the Knights Cross of Honor for Public Service, among many other awards and distinctions; and
WHEREAS, because of his genuine care and concern for his students, Dr. Thomas D. Myers was loved and respected by countless students, both present and former; and
WHEREAS, because of this genuine care and concern, and through his serving as a friend and mentor to students and others, Dr. Thomas D. Myers was lovingly called "Doc" and "Papa Bear"; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas D. Myers not only filled the role of professor, administrator, friend, and mentor; but also filled the role of loving husband to his wife, Bettye Myers; dedicated father to Pauline Elizabeth Helm, and Amy Johnson; step-father to Laura Smiley; and devoted grandfather and brother; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas D. Myers died on February 23, 2002;
NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The House of Representatives does hereby honor the memory of Dr. Thomas D. Myers for his commitment to the citizens of the Commonwealth through his many roles as educator, administrator, and civic leader, and holds his service as a shining example of the good that can be accomplished in this world.
Section 2. The House of Representatives affirms that the loss of Dr. Thomas D. Myers will affect all the lives of the people whom he has touched and offers its condolences to his family, friends, and the citizens of Richmond and the Commonwealth who will miss him.
Section 3. The Clerk of the House of Representatives is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Mrs. Bettye Myers, 750 Whitlock Road, Richmond, Kentucky 40475.
