A RESOLUTION honoring Raymond "Corky" Withrow upon being inducted into the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame.
WHEREAS, Corky Withrow was born on November 28, 1937; and
WHEREAS, Corky Withrow attended Central City High School, where he was a two-sport athlete. On the basketball court, Withrow was a 1956 first-team All-American. He led Central City to three consecutive Sweet Sixteens, scored 3,130 career points, and was twice named to the Sweet Sixteen all-tournament team. He is a member of the Central City Hall of Fame, the State Tournament Hall of Fame, and the KHSAA Hall of Fame for his extraordinary accomplishments during his high school career; and
WHEREAS, Corky Withrow attended Georgetown College and Kentucky Wesleyan College. As a member of the 1957 Georgetown squad, he starred in an upset of the University of Louisville, scoring 26 points in the contest; and
WHEREAS, after his collegiate career, Corky Withrow would turn to baseball. As a member of the St. Louis Cardinals, he would appear in six games, but he achieved success as a minor leaguer, batting .260 in his career and appearing in 1,128 games from 1956 through 1966. His two-sport career allowed him the unusual distinction of having played with both Wilt Chamberlain and Stan Musial in the same year; and
WHEREAS, as a testament to Corky Withrow's stellar career, he has been inducted into the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame. The 16-member class, which includes such Kentucky greats as Jack Givens, Vernon Hatton, and Todd May, is the third Hall of Fame class and brings the total inductees to 49 members; and
WHEREAS, this honorable body congratulates Corky Withrow upon being inducted into the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame, commends him for his achievements at Central City High School, and rightfully acknowledges the mark he left upon the sport of basketball in this Commonwealth;
