A Jungle Adventure!"

A continuation of the “Wow!” stories.

Introduction

Show the pupils a picture of a jungle f eks Virgin Forest of Rousseau. (You will find a copy of this painting on this web site i Worksheets under “Virgin Forest”.)

Discuss the picture and make a flow diagram (tankekart) of the pupils’ ideas. Translate the flow diagram into English. Use it as a word list later.

Tell the story of Theo’s jungle adventure in Norwegian Sign Language (NTS).

Story

Theo’s Jungle Adventure

Theo and Vera were lying on the floor playing Snakes and Ladders.

As usual, Vera won. She went dancing out to the kitchen to tell mum - as usual.

Theo was feeling disappointed. ”I always lose,” he thought. He felt tired, and rolled over on his back. He looked at the ceiling, and it started to go round and round. “How strange,” thought Theo. Just then he felt a warm breathe in his ear. He turned his head, expecting to see his dog Wow, but no! He was looking into the eyes of a huge snake that had risen up from the playing board. Theo felt himself falling into the mouth of the snake. He was falling into the dark, open jaws, falling and falling…

Theo closed his eyes tight shut. He felt himself land with a bump!

It was very hot. He opened his eyes slowly. He couldn’t believe what he saw. He was in a jungle. Theo looked around him. He could feel hundreds of eyes watching him from behind every leaf, bush and tree…

Follow up

Drama: The pupils re-tell the story. Discuss how Theo’s feelings changed in the course of the story. Let the pupils dramatise the story. Use BSL/english.

Reading: Copy the text and use it as a reading text if suitable for your class.

Worksheet: Copy the worksheet for the pupils. (You will find the worksheet on this web site under “Theo’s jungle adventure.”)

Who is watching Theo? Beside each pair of eyes there is a number. Look at the BSL sign with the corresponding number. Can the pupils guess which animal the sign belongs to? If not, look in a BSL dictionary (e.g. Communication Link.) Draw a line from the sign to the animal. Write the English name for the animal on the worksheet. (Teachers should spell English words using the BSL alphabet.)

Sign Language: Compare the BSL signs on the worksheet with NTS signs.

Look at the BSL sign for SNAKE. Which part of the snake’s body does the sign represent?

Does NTS have any similar signs? (FUGL, ELEFANT, KU osv)

Handicraft: Make a jungle in a plate. Each pupil has a dinner plate.

Fill it with soil or sand. Find small plants and leaves etc. Make a miniature jungle. Maybe the pupils can make miniature animals out of clay.

Games:

Bingo.

Make bingo cards with six squares. The pupils decide which “jungle words or BSL signs” they need to practise. Write a list of at least nine words on the blackboard. The pupils choose six words from the list, to write on their bingo cards. Play bingo. Use BSL.

I went for a walk

The pupils stand in a ring. The leader says in BSL: “I WENT FOR A WALK IN THE JUNGLE. I SAW A SNAKE.” The player on his right says: “ I WENT FOR A WALK IN THE JUNGLE. I SAW A SNAKE AND A BIRD.” So the game goes on until a player cannot remember what has been said. Then we start the game again.
