9th Grade College Unit Project

As a culminating project for our college unit we will work in our advisory to create a promotional video informing high school students about a college. Advisories will present their videos in the auditorium to the whole school. Two prizes will be awarded. Three judges will decide which video scores highest on the project criteria. In addition, the 10th grade students and teachers will decide which video gets them most interested in a school.

The Colleges:This year, we will be visiting SUNY Maritime and we will focus on learning about the SUNY syste, which is the nation's largest state university system, The State University of New York (SUNY), was founded at Potsdam, New York in 1816. SUNY has grown to include 64 individual colleges and universities that were either formerly independent institutions or directly founded by the State University of New York.

Today, the State University of New York's 64 campuses are spread through out the entire state—from rural to urban areas. The State University of New York's 64 campuses are divided into four categories, based on educational mission, types of academic opportunities available and degrees offered. SUNY offers students a wide diversity of educational options including short-term vocational/technical courses, certificate, associate, and baccalaureate degree programs, graduate degrees and post-doctoral studies. SUNY provides access to almost every field of academic or professional study within the system via over 7,000 degree and certificate programs.

SUNY attracts the best and brightest scholars, scientists, artists and professionals and boasts nationally and internationally recognized faculty in all major disciplines. Faculty are regular recipients of prestigious awards and honors. SUNY colleges and universities range from world-renowned community colleges, such as the Fashion Institute of Technology, to first-rate graduate schools and the nation's top veterinary school. The highly-regarded doctoral degree granting universities are home to top research programs and attract experts in a variety of fields. Students study in campus classrooms and laboratories or work from a distance through the SUNY Learning Network, which provides educational opportunities to more than 100,000 students through courses and degree and certificate programs.

The Research: In order to make our promotional video, each advisory needs to conduct its own research. You can do research by:

  • Using online resources, such as the college website, as well other web sources, such as the College Board
  • Using books and college guides to get information about the college
  • Calling the university and asking questions

Logistics: .

  • We would need laptops in advisories for students to do research.
  • We would need to buy college books or order college guides to help with in-class research
  • We would need to pick schools in 9th grade team meeting (so all our advisories don’t pick the same school!)
  • We would need to get judges for the assembly
