Welcome to 9th Grade English! This year we will read various types of Literature and discuss the importance of these texts in our lives and in our world. You will also develop your writing skills throughout the year and learn how to better communicate your thoughts through writing. You will also contribute to discussions and make formal presentations to the class.

Course Goals

The student will…

●read various types of Literature in and outside the classroom.

●compose focused journal entries and complete warm-ups on various days during the week.

●use writing skills to complete writing assignments and multiple types of poetry.

●study grammar and apply these skills to writing.

●actively participate in classroom activities and discussions.

Grading

All students will be graded based on….

●ability and willingness to participate during class discussions and daily warm-ups.

●being prepared for class every day.

●turning in all assignments ON TIME!

●performance on tests/quizzes/projects, papers, etc.

Grading Scale:

●Tests 30 %

Quizzes/Reading Journals: 20 %

Class Work: 20%

●Homework: 10 %

Nine Week Assessments: 20 %

Supplies

  1. 3 ring binder
  2. 3 dividers labeled: Grammar, Writing, Literature
  3. Pens/Pencils
  4. Flash drive—these can be purchased at Wal-Mart for $12.00
  5. Tissues (for the classroom)
  6. *Access to a working computer and internet

*Final drafts of ALL essays and papers must be typed. This is something that future teachers at ACHS will require, as well as college professors. Often a printer is broken or out of ink, but students do have access to printers in the school library where they can print papers.Plenty of notice will be given about due dates via the class website, as well as given to the students to record in their agendas.

Class Rules

  1. Please be on time for every class. Tardies are inexcusable and recorded daily.
  2. NO FOOD OR DRINKS.
  3. Have materials daily including your literature book, pen/pencil, paper, and notebook.
  4. Remain in your seat until the bell rings at the end of class.
  5. Class time is not a time to use the restroom—please go between classes.
  6. No cell phones, MP3 players, or iPods. If one is seen, it is taken to the office immediately.

Tardy Policy

Students must be in the classroom and seated with all necessary materials at hand, homework turned in, and on warm-up by the tardy bell, or they will be counted as tardy.

Missed Work

1 day absent = 1 day to make up assignments

2 days absent = 2 days to make up assignments

3 or more days absent = 5 days to make up work.

*STUDENT ATHLETES & THOSE INVOLVED IN EXTRACIRRICULAR ACTIVITIES:

Sports events, practices, and rehearsals are no excuse to miss homework assignments or projects. Remember, your first priority is academics
