Purpose / This unit standard is for people working in the steel manufacturing sector.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: carry out steel quality operations; carry out arc furnace servicing operations; tap arc furnace; and maintain stock levels.

Explanatory notes

1 Definition

Company documentation refers to the documented procedures, manufacturer’s manuals and selected reference texts for the equipment and process.

2 Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to – Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991.

3 This unit standard must be assessed in a workplace environment.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Carry out steel quality operations.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Temperature tests meet company documentation for number and timing.

1.2 Samples sent to laboratory meet company documentation for number and timing.

1.3 Samples sent to laboratory meet technical process specifications.

Range specifications include but are not limited to – size, shape, surface quality.

1.4 Lancing of molten steel is carried out in accordance with company documentation for duration, lance position, and time in process.

Outcome 2

Carry out arc furnace servicing operations.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Arc furnace servicing tasks are carried out in accordance with company documentation.

Range servicing tasks include but are not limited to – lances changed, electrodes changed and built up, slag doors, launders, and tapholes cleaned and rebuilt, refractories refurbished.

2.2 Equipment is used in accordance with company documentation.

Range equipment includes but is not limited to – oxygen lances, wheeled vehicles, lifting gear.

2.3 The refill of gunning silo and carbon powder silo complies with company documentation.

Outcome 3

Tap arc furnace.

Evidence requirements

3.1 Measures to reduce steel spillage and skulling throughout tapping operations are carried out in accordance with company documentation.

3.2 Tapped steel flow strikes the ladle target.

3.3 The amount of slag in the ladle is reduced in accordance with company documentation.

3.4 Tapping operations are carried out in accordance with company documentation.

Outcome 4

Maintain stock levels.

Evidence requirements

4.1 Maintenance of stock levels is carried out in accordance with company documentation to enable continuity of production.
