8th grade FACS: Family & Consumer Sciences

Course Description: In FACS classes we will focus on developing the skills needed to successfully balance relationships and responsibilities in your family, career, and community life.

Course Outline:

Week 1-5 / Sewing / Machine Parts & Safety, pajama pants sewing project,
Week 6 / Life Skills / Family Structures & Relationships, Parenting & Child Development
Week 7-8 / Consumer skills
Week 9-12 / Nutrition & Wellness / My Plate, Body Mass Index, “Supersize Me”
Week 13-18 / Food Preparation / Food Safety & Sanitation, Basic Food Prep

Notes:

You will need paper/pencil,sewing supplies, class work/materials and a Great Attitude !

Video clips are often used from various programs on Food Network.

“The Blindside” and “Supersize Me” may be shown in their entirety with corresponding curriculum related to subject-matters discussed in class

“ Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory “(Rated G) may be shown in its entirety if time allows

You will receive a list of sewing supply needs for the pajama pants sometime next week with a due date.

Make-up labs: If you are absent from school on a lab day, you must complete an “At Home Cooking Lab” making either the recipe you missed or one approved by Mrs. Zimmerman. You will have a zero for the missed lab until your make up lab is turned in. Make up labs are due within a week of the missed lab.

Discipline Policy:

1st Offense: Verbal Warning, stay after class

2nd Offense: 10-minute detention with Mrs. Zimmerman, blue incident report filled out for office

3rd Offense: Alternate assignment given, removed from lab or group activity until further notice

First Assignment: You and your parent/guardian must read this handout & sign below. Return this signed paper to class by ______.
