Explanatory notes

1 Definitions

Organisation refers to a specific business entity which may be – profit or non-profit; in private, public, or voluntary sectors; a business unit, iwi, or other special-purpose body.

Working environment refers in this unit standard particularly to the values, rules, actual and espoused workplace culture that contributes to the environment.

Culture refers to a system of shared values, assumptions, beliefs, and norms that unite the members of the team or organisation.

2 This unit standard may be assessed on the basis of evidence of demonstrated performance in the workplace or in simulated work situations designed to draw upon similar performance to that required in work. In practice, this will call for a variety of modes of assessment and forms of evidence. Evidence is required to show consistency of performance across a range of situations and to demonstrate knowledge, understanding, and skill in the principles and practices directly relating to the competent performance of outcomes and evidence requirements.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Develop and implement work standards and processes for a safe and supportive working environment, in accordance with organisational requirements.

Range evidence is required for four standards and processes which may include but are not limited to – organisational policies and practices, workplace agreements, workplace systems and procedures, individual and team standards and processes, guidelines, operating instructions, new technologies.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Work standards and processes are in accordance with objectives and required outcomes, and are recorded in the required format.

1.2 Opportunities for improvement are identified and assessed for feasibility, in consultation with appropriate individuals, and changes are implemented.

1.3 Work standards and processes identify responsibilities of individuals, teams, and the organisation in maintaining a safe working environment, and are agreed by all parties.

1.4 Input into the development and implementation of standards and processes is sought and utilised from individuals and teams.

1.5 Changes to work standards and processes are made in the required time-frame and format with people being kept informed and up to date.

Outcome 2

Maintain a safe and supportive working environment.

Range includes but is not limited to – personal safety, cultural safety.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Behaviours which demonstrate respect and support for a safe and supportive working environment are incorporated in planning and work practices, and are modelled.

2.2 Policies and procedures that contribute to maintaining a safe and supportive working environment are identified and implemented using established organisational procedures.

Range evidence is required for three policies and procedures which may include but are not limited to – workplace harassment, workplace values, standards of behaviour, EEO, diversity, stress management.

2.3 Coaching and mentoring to assist the maintenance of a safe and supportive working environment are implemented within established procedures and agreed time-frames.

This unit standard is expiring. Assessment against the standard must take place by the last date for assessment set out below.
