Expectations

Students will write several types of essays and analyze various forms of literature. There will be assignments outside of class as well as during class time, which will include research assignments, oral presentations, an original play, an original short story, and several formal essays. The McDougall-Littell Literature textbook will also be online for students to access on the internet. A warm-up notebook counts as a grade each nine weeks; warm-ups may be vocabulary, grammar or journal exercises. Class participation is critical, and students will earn a grade each quarter reflective of their weekly participation. Students will be expected to uphold high standards in their academics and in their behavior.

Tests: Tests and quizzes are to be taken as a serious matter. Once testing materials are passed out, all students are to remain completely silent until the test/quiz is over. Parents will be notified of any infractions, and a zero could very well result if a student behaves in a questionable manner during tests or quizzes.

Grade policy: Please refer to the syllabus.

Make-up work/late work: Each student is responsible for his or her own make-up work and must follow the late-work school policy. Check the blog for assignments. Any late work from a student who was not absent will only be accepted at reduced credit.

Materials: These need to be brought to class every day, or parents will be notified when a student repeatedly fails to bring materials. Students need to be responsible for their own materials.

1. Loose-leaf paper only for work turned in—not spiral notebook paper

2. A single subject spiral notebook with at least 70 pages to be used as a warm-up notebook

3. The book or textbook which the class is using at the time.

4. Dark blue or black ink pen—Graded work/final drafts will not be accepted in pencil or light-colored ink.

5. Duo-tang folder for handouts

Donations accepted: The class often needs boxes of facial tissue for student use.

A FEW RULES WHICH WILL HELP STUDENTS SUCCEED:

1. Be on time—enforced according to the student handbook.

2. Be prepared with materials, book, and any assignments due.

3. Be respectful and non-disruptive to everyone in class, or a citation and parent contact will result.

Persistent disruptions will result in an administrative write-up.

4. Students are not allowed to eat or drink during class. Any food, gum or drink that is visible will be confiscated.

The only exception is a water bottle with a cap.

5. Personal articles unrelated to class will be taken up and not returned until the end of the school day. These include but are not limited to: grooming items, make-up, headphones/music players, playing cards, cell phones, electronic games and personal notes being passed/written during class.

6. Remain in your seat and stay in class the full period. Limited hall passes will be issued each nine weeks. If you have a medical reason to leave please notify the teacher in advance and be prepared to verify it with a parent/medical note.
