Class Description:

Welcome to 7th grade life science! This year we will be exploring a variety of topics with a focus on real-world application and “thinking like a scientist.” These include the scientific method, classification of living things, cell structure and processes, genetics, reproduction and development, human body systems, ecology and evolution.

Required Materials:

In addition to the usual, expected school supplies (pen, pencil, paper, etc.), you will need a one-inch, white binder divided into four sections:

·  Class Materials

·  Homework

·  Labs

·  Tests/Quizzes

Grading Policy:

Grades will be assigned using a total points system. Your average is determined by dividing total pointed earned by total possible points. All grades, class materials and assignments will be available online via the Canvas website, at all times!

Points will generally be broken down as:

Homework (5-10 pts each) – It is expected that homework will be handed in at the beginning of the period the day that it is due. Late homework will receive half-credit.

Labs & Projects (10-50 pts) – We will be completing a variety of lab investigations and projects this year. Late submissions will lose 10% credit each day.

Quizzes & Tests – Quizzes (15-25 points) and tests (30-50 pts) will be given periodically with advance notice.

**Bonus points – Keep an eye out for opportunities to earn bonus points!

______

Attendance Policy:

It is the student’s responsibility to obtain and complete any missed work following an absence. See Ms. Leahy, ask a friend, or check Canvas! Please write “absent” on any work that you submit late due to an absence (this helps remind me, so I don’t take off credit for being late J).

Dissections:

Students will be given the opportunity to perform two exploratory dissections this year in science! This includes the sheep heart dissection, followed by the greatly anticipated frog dissection. Students will be expected to follow all safety protocols prior to and during these investigations, or the privilege may be revoked. Students may choose to complete an alternate assignment if he/she chooses not to participate for any personal reasons.
