UK Theatre Spring Line-upIncludes

Shakespearean Tragedy, Award-winning Comedy

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 29, 2007) − Each year the University of Kentucky Department of Theatre presents aseason of classics and popular modern plays for theatre audiences. This spring UK presents two more plays, William Shakespeare's tragedy "Titus Andronicus" and contemporary award-winning comedy "As Bees in Honey Drown" by Douglas Carter Beene.The productions will be presented in UK's Guignol and Briggs Theatres, located in the UK Fine Arts Building on Rose Street.

"Titus Andronicus" is Shakespeare's earliest tragedy and comes to the Guignol stage in all its bloody and terrifying glory. This will mark the first production of the Bard's play in Lexington. Audiences can catch this productionwith its extensive fight scenes at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 15 – 17 and 22 – 24. A matinee of the tragedy will be presented at 2 p.m. Feb. 25. These performances will be staged in the historic Guignol Theatre on the UK campus.The play is suited to mature audiences only, due to nudity and violence.

"As Bees in Honey Drown" is the winner of the 1997 Outer Critics Circle award. The comedy explores its heroine Alexa Vere de Vere's voracious hunger for fame. Beane's Alexa is described as a combination of such tenacious characters as Auntie Mame, Holly Golightly and Sally Bowles. Audiences can see "As Bees in Honey Drown" at 7:30 p.m. April 19 – 21 and 26 – 28, or at a 2 p.m. matinee April 29. This production will be presented in UK's Briggs Theatre.

The UK Department of Theatre has already presented three popular productions during the fall that included performances of "Twelfth Night" by a Cambridge University touring acting troupe, and "Summertime" and "Raisin in the Sun" by UK's talented students.

Tickets for the UK Department of Theatre productions are $15 for general admission; $10 for UK faculty and staff and senior citizens; and $5 for students. Group rates are available as well.
