7th Grade Miss Rolfes Reading

Accelerated Reader 2nd Trimester

During second trimester, we will be trying something new to monitor individual student reading. We will be using the “Accelerated Reader” program and points. We will also be having mini conferences once a week to check in with Miss Rolfes.

“Accelerated Reader” is a well-known program used to categorize novels and track student reading comprehension, understanding, and growth as a reader. Students will use AR to find books to reading during the trimester and to take online quizzes on the books they finish. Each AR book is given a point value based on its difficulty, page numbers, etc. For example, a novel like The River is worth 4 AR points whereas a novel like Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is worth 12 AR points.

Students are required to earn 20 AR points this trimester. It will be up to them how they will earn the 20 points, but they will need to read books that are in the AR system and take quizzes to do so. Before beginning a book, students should check the AR Book Finder website to make sure that their novel is registered in Accelerated Reader. Students can absolutely read a book that is not AR, but they should also read for the required points, too.

The website is and from there they can type in their book title to make sure the book is registered and to find out how many points it is worth.

Students should try to choose books that are around their reading level. Once a student finishes reading a book, they can log on to Accelerated Reader and take a quiz over that book to earn points.

The required 20 AR points will count as a Reading test grade at the end of the trimester. However many points they earn will be entered out of a total score of 20 to determine the test grade. For example, if a student earns 17 points out of the required 20, they would earn an 85% for that test grade.

Students will be given silent reading time in class to read their book, but are expected to read at home, too. Once a week, I will meet with students for a “mini conference” about what book they are reading and what quizzes they are taking. I will keep track of our meetings, but students will be given a paper to track their books and points, too. They should also print out their score after taking each AR quiz to keep with them.

I hope this will encourage students to read at their own pace and find books that interest them. We will be reading at least one novel as a class this trimester, too. Let’s make it a great trimester for Reading!
